Does anyone know; are all dental school admissions affected by affirmative action? What about white privilage? Or just particular schools? I know we would all like to believe admissions are on merit, but who here believes that they were affected by affirmative action in a postive or negative way. Who here believes they were affected by white priviliage in a positive or negative way?

Definitely a road we don't need to go down...again.

everytime race, affirmative action, civil rights, etc. are brought up on any of the SDN message boards, someone is going to get their feelings hurt, and the true feelings of some future health professionals surface, truth be told, just apply to the schools you feel you have a solid chance of getting into, and everything will work out the way it shall, good things happen to good people! 👍

The search function is great, but I want to know the feelings of the current entering students and current applicants. The search brings up old threads....old feelings. And it may be a "bad thread" in your mind, it may hurt feelings, but it hurts when you're the one being victimized.....so if it's so bad to you....don't respond. Let the thread die in your mind. Let people who want to comment, do so.... let them share their success with the system, or frustration at being shot down because of what they are, not based on their interview skills or resume.

Judging by the responses, I'd guess that the feelings on the topics haven't changed much since the last time this was brought up.

Affirmative action doesn't play much of a role in dental admissions except perhaps in a few state schools located in more "progressive" states. If it did, schools like Meharry and Howard wouldn't have the need to be around. Try posting in the lounge, I'm sure you'll get plenty of responses there.

I have checked out the old threads - WOW - there are some HEATED discussions - my 2 cents:

People 'manipulate' the idea of affirmitive action in a certain way to provide an effective argument for or against it. - THERIN LIES THE PROBLEM.

There are actually some win-win situation when it comes to 'affirmitive action' for ALL groups/types/races/gender/and ethnicity - WHY DON'T WE USE THIS POST FOR ANY IDEAS OF WHAT THESE 'WIN-WIN' SITUATIONS ARE?

I CAN THINK OF A FEW!

i think it's tough to determine if one were "victimized" by affirmative action. there's speculation, denial, theory, and maybe some cases of actual aa, but i don't believe anyone on these forums is explicitly told by adcoms that it is the reason of non-acceptance, and thus there shouldn't be any first-hand claims of such here.
