Afip Closing?!?!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think the american registry of pathology who actually runs the course will continue to exist. Also, during the course, they don't really use a lot of specimens or other things that really need the institute for. Most of the lectures are slide/powerpoint based and the faculty comes mostly from institutions outside of the AFIP (most are AFIP almuni though).

The problem will be that right now there is that critical mass of pathologists and radiologists in one place. Most of the AFIP lecturers were also USUHS faculty, I would hope that they continue the course maybe somewhere out at the planned campus in Bethesda.

This better not happen before next March or I will be extremely pissed off. How can they just can this great resource? G-dam bastards.

Gotta save every penny to open all these new permanent bases in Afganistan and Iraq...

That's sort of reassuring fw. OTOH everybody will jump ship asap if a solution is not figured out right away. I mean these guys could get jobs anywhere -- they will not hang around waiting for the locks to change. I hope the course survives (have heard it is the best single educational experience during residency), but honestly I also hope the institute survives, perhaps under the NIH as some speculate. What a shame.

Well, the AFIP has two flavors of faculty.

The military guys (like Koeller).
They just find a notice in the interoffice mail: 'report to the commander of the Baghram air base hospital on june 15th.' along with a couple of forms to fill out to get the combat pay.

The civilian faculty.
They get turned over on a fairly regular basis anyway. They will just move on to some academic post.

I think the course will survive in one form or another.

I think the only one speculating that in the moment is me (which is probably just an expression of my absolute cluelessness about the workings of the federal goverment).
