I did a prelim IM, then matched categorical anesthesia. I did repeat my intern year in one of the top anesthesia programs and now I am an anesthesia PGY2.
In short, I found myself liking the day to day work in IM than being in the OR. Call that irony. So, I want to switch to IM for good. I have support from my current PD. And I can get letters from IM attendings where I train, which is one of the top 10 IM programs in the country. Now, my questions are:
1. How realistic is it for me to find a PGY2 spot for July 2015 at this point? Any resources? When should I start calling programs for open spots, now before the match, after the match,or close to May/June?
I have not talked to my institution's IM yet. I am hoping to transfer there, but I know it does not always happen.
2. I'm thinking of doing SOAP this March. They are for PGY1 spots, but I'm thinking they might be able to give me advanced credits for the rotations I have done. Is SOAP even worth a try this year?
3. If I re-enter the match next year, should I apply to top programs, big programs, or community programs? I know that I might have funding issues that may be a problem to community programs. At this point, I will take any PGY2 IM anywhere. I just miss medicine and want to be a board-certified internist.
4. Any programs that typically have PGY2 positions? I don't mind doing some intern months to familiarize myself with the new system.
Any insights appreciated.
