I'm an OLD med student. I'll be 49 when I graduate. Do any of you have any thoughts on whether an older graduate can get a residency in EM? What have you seen out there?

My program is very friendly to older medical students. At 43, I am not even nearly the oldest resident here.

I hit the big 40 this year and there are several older residents in my program.

Take care,
Jeff

i thought ER was the most older resident friendly field.

Thank you all for the encouragement.

Wow Jeff, I had no idea you were that old!! I am not too far behind you buddy. My medical school buddy was a woman who was in her mid 40's. She started EM in her late 40's and will I believe be over 50 after residency completion. She is stellar! My program has several older residents, with 2 nearly 40.

Well, when you put it like that! 🙂

Hey bulge, don't worry about your hip. It'll feel better after the titanium.

Trust me.

Take care,
Jeff

Yeah but how's the prostate doing?

That's what I'm worried about. (I just turned a wee 30).

Wee. I get it. Funny.

I'd say something really nasty but I've got to run to the bathroom.

Take care,
Jeff

Just curious folks. It looks that we have a lot of information here from people that are over 40 and going into emergency medicine.

Does anyone have any stats on how long physicians in EM practice?

Is there a "traditional" cutoff? Or a forced one?

Thanks. Just curious.

The earliest trainees (like me) are in their 50s. Most of us are still working, often with reduced clinical and increased educational/admin duties.

If you're careful with your money you can retire early. Then you die.

...Then you die.
Oh sure, give away the ending!

I'm 37 now, and decided to go to PA school instead of med school. I can say with confidence that age was NOT a reason for this decision.

PGY-1 43 here, got at least 3 > 40 (Morristown)

If you remove one space, you become a PGY 143 . . . the oldest resident (and person) on the planet. Practicing medicine since 1864, probably friends with that Osler fellow.
