I was inspired to start this thread based on a previous thread that asks for peoples age and where they are from. A few questions:

A) Do ad coms pay attention to AGE?

B) What do you guys think is the average AGE of first year dental students? (should be 22 - but is it?)

C) As a 27 year old, do I need to be worried about the youngsters applying?

D) In summary - is AGE just a number for ad coms?

How many of you took time off during your undergraduate years before applying to dental school? And how many started/will start dental school after four years or less of undergraduate school?

I will be starting dental school (hopefully) after three years of undergrad. Man I am not going to have a life next year as I will be graduating after summer semester which leaves me only on average 1 week of break after which most schools I have applied to start.

I was out of undergrad for 3 years before I decided I wanted to apply and will be 26 when I enter dental school in August. So I don't really think age is something that will hinder your application process. In fact, I think it might have actually helped mine.

Thanks! I didn't see it from that angle - 3 years in the real world sure does develop interpersonal/management/leadership skills, not to mention responsibility and discipline!

I ahve been working for 3 year after UG as well, and everything I learned here will be an asset when I start practicing. I cant have those 3 years back, but it wasn't a waste or anything.

Sometimes I still get jealous of all the 21 year olds that will have their practice going way before 30!! 🙂

I was thinking the exact same thing! Starting a practice at 30 seems a little daunting but I agree that I wouldn't give up the experience that I gained during the 3 years I was working. Plus, I think at our age we are able to manage our time better. Most people our age don't live party to party and I think the Adcoms know that.

I will be 26 when I start dental school in August. At times I'm envious of those coming straight out of undergrad, but when I thoroughly think about it, I'm happy I took the route that I did. 4 years of real world experience not only lead me to dentistry but also cemented my desires to make this my career. In the 4 years, I gained invaluable experience as a bum, a daytrader, and as a consultant. Not only am I much more mature now, but I am also more focused and driven than ever before.

I guess basically what I'm saying is that age isn't as important as what you did in those years, and where those experiences have gotten you as a person.

You might want to double check this with the school but if I remember correctly from my interview, University of Lousiville starts on July 6th this year. I would imagine that the start date next year would be pretty close to the same time which may interfere with your summer classes.

A) I don' think AGE is the most important factor when the adcom reviews your application. I know OHSU has accepted a 19 yrs old person this year. So as long you show that your have the maturity level (maturity should increase with age, I hope), you should be fine.

B) 24 is the average age for the past years, but this number could increase (since more older applicants applied and got accepted)

C) Not at all, 27 is absolutely fine!!!

D) No, age is not at all an important factor in your application!
