I know being old doesn't hurt you at allopathic med schools...is that the case for DO? I am 25 and am thinking about applying to DO schools...are there people as old as I am applying?

I think, if anything, DO schools may be even more receptive to non-traditional ("old") applicants. DO schools typically weigh life experiences more heavily than many allopathic schools and take these into consideration along with your numbers when you apply. I'm 25 and I'll be starting at NSUCOM this fall. By the way, be careful who you're calling old - I certainly don't feel old 🙄

I agree, you would be more receptive with DO schools rather then MD schools with your age. They have the highest percentage of 'non-trad' students.

In truth, I'm 29 and I applied last year when I was 28. No one...my MD or DO schools during my interviews really cared about my age. They wanted to know I was a great student, knew what i was getting into, knew the work associated with it, and that I was a tool. None of the other interviewers or medical students cared either.

I even think there is a thread where a 71 y/o is graduating from MSUCOM. Thats dedication!

25 is not old. Well, it's old enough to get you into OldPreMeds, but you'll probably be the baby of the bunch. I'm 40. You may call me old (though there are people in their fifties in med schools and residencies right now.)

Seriously though, having a little life experience under your wing will definately be a plus. I just hope all of my ups and downs through life will help get me in.

I was 31 when I started med school & I wasn't close to being the oldest. The average age in my class when we started was 26-27.

I'll turn 32 just after I start medical school this fall. Not a single person at my DO interviews mentioned my age except to say they thought it was a *positive* thing to have a life outside of school before going to medical school!
