i was looking over the amcas instructions and saw that verification of my amcas application takes a max of 6 weeks. if so, should i have my amcas verified by the first week of may at the latest if i want to send in my application to med schools by the first week of june? (meaning EVERYTHING should be in by may-- LORs, transcripts, personal statement, etc.)

the first day that you are allowed to submit is around the beginning of june (even though the application opens at the beginning of may). if you submit in early june you'll likely be verified pretty quickly (like, in less than a week or two). secondaries don't come out until july anyway so you can't 'send' your complete application to med schools until then. if you're applications are complete by the end of july/early august you'll be at the front of the line for consideration.

Really soon. A lot of people submit it on the very first hour it opens. Especially in SDN.

does it matter if u get verified as early as the first day or what not. The only thing that mattesr is when ur complete by the actual school right??

like u said secondaries dont come out until july so anyone that gets verified b4 then is in the same boat regardless of who was earlier. am I right?

oh okay. that's great to hear, as i don't have my personal statement written yet. is there a common barrier that prevents applicants from having their amcas verified? (e.g. they submitted their entire application but there was a little glitch somewhere and it delayed verification) or is verification pretty smooth?

verification is not a huge deal. the only thing they'll likely nitpick over is if you entered your grades and course names exactly as they appear on your transcript vs. how they want it to appear (ex. one of my research classes was graded sat/unsat, and amcas changed it to pass/fail. you just review the changes they make and off your application goes)

Make sure all your class and grade listings are accurate in relation to your transcript. Also, make sure they've actually received your transcript. Of course, you can't do any of that until this application cycle opens in May. The only reason verification gets delayed is for missing or incorrect info/documents, so just proofread a lot.

beware of transcript delays, you won't get queued up for verification until they're all received by AMCAS. this is true regardless of when you submit. they are good about telling you when they get them, though.

AMCAS data isn't even submitted to schools until the last week of June. from the looks of this year's thread, you would have had until 6/11 to submit in order to be verified by that date. in other words, you would have gained NOTHING by submitting any sooner than the 11th. after that, you're in line with everyone else.

the first day for submission last year was i believe June 4th.

If you submit in the first couple of hours, you can get verified that day or the next day.

I submitted the night it opened, and it took 6 days.

So it gets exponentially longer to get verified the longer you wait. It will also take longer if you don't do a good job of writing your classes.

You can and should submit your transcripts to AMCAS as soon as the application opens in April or May. Verification process does not start until your transcripts and application have been received. It took my application 3 weeks to be verified once my transcripts arrived in early June. And it is incorrect that secondaries don't come out until July. Some secondaries (e.g. Dartmouth) are sent/made available immediately once you submit your primary AMCAS application, even before it is verified.

Verification can take up to 6 weeks during peak times. Early june, it's probably a few hours to days at most.

It doesn't matter if you are verified on the first day or not. B/c regardless, AMCAS sends your apps to medical schools around June 24th. Therefore, if you are verified June 1st or June 23rd....you will be looked at the same.

Additional point, it's important to be COMPLETE at most schools early. Submitting primaries early doesn't mean anything, unless you have your secondaries in by August/September.....

fine, *most* secondaries come out in july.

So how soon can you send in your transcripts to AMCAS? Obviously mine come directly from the schools but they take different times to get mailed.

So the earliest possible would be:
Submit primaries - first week of June the minute it opens
Verification of AMCAS - the same day in the first week of June
Submit secondaries - June-August as they come out (do any schools give you a secondary to do after late August if you submitted your primary and got it verified by 6/24?)

When do get invited to interviews if you submit the secondary as early as possible to each school? Would it be around 1-2 months after the secondary submission? Even more?

What if your second semester (of your junior year) doesn't end until late May? Should you wait until all grades are in, and then submit them to AMCAS?

you can certainly start filling in all the rquired info and all the grades up to that point (since you have to put them in one by one) so that you're good to go as soon as those grades come in

randomb - after being complete at most places in late july/early august, interview invites for me came in starting in late july and going through october, with most of the invites coming in late august and throughout september. the SDN school specific threads are a good way to find out when invites start going out. you could also check out mdapps (a lot of people keep detailed timelines for each school). many of the schools that i applied to started out by inviting people chronologically in order of their complete dates, so september invites went to the people who were complete in july/august, etc. and many schools go back and re-review you at a later time if you're not in the wave of invites that corresponds to your complete date, so i think it's advantageous to apply early so that you may potentially have many chances to be re-reviewed if you need them.

waiting for may grades to send a transcript to amcas is fine - remember, amcas doesn't send out your primary to medical schools at all until some set date in late june (this year it was like june 24th). so being verified in early june is completely unnecessary.

if anything, LORs are the hangup... getting professors to turn them in on time, or getting committees to send them out early in the summer, can be difficult.

Thanks a lot jla!

What do you mean the secondaries don't come out until july? Is this for all schools? I though (most) schools automatically screened you and based on that they automatically sent the secondaries.

First, even if you get verified in early June, AMCAS doesn't do a batch release of primaries to schools until later in June (around June 20 or so)...so even for schools that only do a quick screen, that can't happen until late June anyway.

The vast majority of secondaries are not released until July or even later - out of 25 primaries that I sent, I can only remember a couple of secondaries released prior to July 1. There was a flurry at the end of the first week to 10 days of July, then again in the 2nd half of the month. There are a handful of schools that release a secondary in June, and then a handful that release in August (and maybe one or two that don't get it out until September).

July is the main month. IIRC I wrote my last secondary around July 23, didn't do anymore after that (combination of burnout and lost interest - I maxed out at 15 secondaries - there is a burnout factor).

Therefore, if you get verified in June, you won't miss a thing. I highly recommend getting verified in early June - I submitted the first day, was verified a day later - I found that I needed a few weeks to recover from that rush, and was frankly very happy that I didn't have to bother with secondaries until July...this is a very tough process, lots of "hurry and wait" to it...pace yourself.
