  1. Attending Physician
I'm debating whether or not to go on the interview at Albert Einstein in North Philly. I've already looked at the 6 year old Scutwork reviews, and I've backsearched this program already.

For those that have interviewed there already or know info about this program--

1. how were the fellowship placements?
2. what was the makeup of the residents? mostly MDs?

Thanks everybody. If you would like, you could PM me too.

Thanks for the reply gutonc and the three peeps who PMed me!

I'm interested in what the 3 peeps that PMed you had to say about the program. I have an interview there later in the season. Thanks!

No prob. To sum up, I got replies from two people who interviewed there (one last year, one this year) and one current resident.

All have said that the academics are very strong. They are no longer affiliated with Jefferson, even though there are sometimes Jefferson med students and many Jefferson faculty. AE is on its own. Apparently, they are building a new hospital somewhere to become a more dominant academic force in Philly?

Also, the community is supposed to be very tight knit and supportive. Teaching is excellent. And as for fellowships, AE surprisingly has many spots. GI has 4 spots each year, which is about as many as a university program. THey prefer their own for fellowships.

The area of North Philly is pretty terrible. Can't even go outside during the day at the hospital. But residents live in the suburbs or in Center City. That's about all the info I got...

Interviewed there this year, and agree with what is written, especially about the part where they prefer their own for fellowships. Man, they really really do. If you go there for residency, trust me, if you work hard, you will complete A fellowship of your choice. You may not go to the harvard system or even to UPenn for GI or Cards, but you will get your GI and Cards certification. They really love their residents.

I'm an IM resident in Philadelphia, and have a good friend from med school who trained there. Seems like a strong community porgram. Same neighborhood and patient population as Temple, which lends itself to sick patients and lots of autonomy.

Strong fellowship match, both internal and external. GI is bascially in-house only. Cardiology does well outside with 3-4 per year. Recent grads also went to Stanford, Yale, Penn, Cleveland Clinic, and Jefferson for Pulm. Apparently strong in other disciplines as well. Met a chief who is going to MD Anderson next year for Heme/Onc.

Most residents live downtown, and nowhere near the hospital.

If you're interested, then check it out. If you already have a strong list, then don't bother. It still doesn't have the univeristy name if that's what you're looking for.

Where else in Philly are you looking? Temple is very strong. Drexel is decent with solid training, and Jefferson is a private hospital with a university name, but very good fellowship placement.

Thanks for the post, bud. I'll keep it anonymous.
