I'm a NJ resident... and am debating between these schools. They're both comparable.. both about an hr away from NYC, both match well etc etc... Anyone have any suggestions? or any hidden perks/ disadvantages for either schools??

Thanks!

Einstein IMO, just because of personal experience, the people there were super friendly and the academic atmosphere was very nice (very pack mentality like) when I visited.

last time i checked the bronx was part of NYC. besides that, einstein doesnt really have it's own academic hospital.

Yeah but the Jacobe's medical center is like... right there

Well, I would choose Albert Einstein because I am currently waiting in the very competitive category at RWJMS and the adcom hasn't decided to accept me or put me on the waiting list. So, go to Einstein. 😉

Honestly, though, I would consider if you want to go more into research or clinical work. Plus, do you want to be in the city or more suburban area. Do you want to stay IS or be OOS? I would also look into scholarships. I do not know if Einstein has any but I think RWJMS has 10 Dean Scholars for their top matriculating students. In the end, which ever med school has more positives after going by each priority issue should be the school you go to. Hope that helps.

both jacobi and montefiore are close but from what ive heard they're more like community hospitals, ie. not ranked in any specialties, not too many big shot faculty.

Go to your state school. IMO no school justifies 100k+ more in loans, but def. not for Einstein.

I'd pick Einstein hands down. Research is much better there and the quality of hospitals is very high. Weiler Hospital is actually on campus...and the Montefiore System is AECOM's "University Hospital." Apart from that, the students there are VERY happy and the community is very friendly and collegial.

Unless money is a big issue, AECOM for sure. A top notch school for clinical and research.

RWJ has an excellent rep and residency match. It wont matter professionally which school you go to.If the $$ difference is large do yourself a favor and go to your state school unless you truly have your heart set on Einstein.
When the loan payments start to kick in you will be happy you did it,the money in medicine is not what it used to be and its not going to get better.Yes Einstein is great great place for sure, but I know people who picked RWJ over it and have not regretted it.

Both are incredible schools. normally, i would say if you want the uber competitive residencies, go with einstein, but i take that back after looking at the match list for both schools.

I would go with RWJ ($$$, fantastic research and clinical opportunities). RWJ even matched more people into things like neurosug, derm, general surg than einstein this past year (both match lists are on their websites).

I'm currently an Einstein student and LOVE this place. Montefiore is the main academic teaching hospital, but we're also affiliated with Jacobi (inner city hospital, also a trauma center), Weiler (more private hospital-type setting), Beth Israel (in Manhattan), and more. The clinical experience here is superb - you see anything and everything in terms of patient pathology (the Monte health system takes care of a huge number of Bronx patients. Many come into the hospital at late stages of their diseases and so you see pathology from the beginning to end stages) and you'll gain skills becoming comfortable and competant taking the initiative to care for any type of patient under your wing. Hard to put in words how great I think the clinical experience is, but just know this is one of the strengths of Einstein and one of the reasons I came here.

Location - yes, we're in the Bx, but we're a 20 min drive into the city and there're options to take an express bus and subway into the city. If you do a required rotation at Beth Israel (BI) in the city, Einstein has free BI housing right across the street from the hospital. Back to the Bronx - a new Starbucks opened a few months ago that's just a 5 min walk from our apts. The new (and huge) research building will be opening this year and really makes a beautiful addition to our campus. We have a new Dean as of 2007, and already we are seeing tons of changes for the better. There are plans to beautify the campus even more over the years, add a bookstore (not a big deal to me that we don't have one, but apparently students would like it so its in the works), etc. (And we have a new website as of a few weeks ago. Check it out if you haven't already!)

Support - we have a LOT of it. The school is incredibly receptive to feedback by students. We get feedback surveys about each academic class we took, each third year rotation we completed, and general surveys about school improvement. There are free tutoring services, lecturers are always more than willing to meet with students after class for questions, and the list goes on.

Research - lots of it. There are more than enough opportunities for bench research. More clinical research opportunities at the hospital sites. Don't really have much else to add - we have research, most students find a mentor and get involved at some point, many end up publishing or producing abstracts/posters. As in any school, you just have to find the right mentor and right project that fits you time frame.

Ultimately, I have zero complaints about Einstein. The new dean is wonderful and I only wish I can see the improvements in the upcoming years (I'm graduating this year) - which I'm sure there will be a lot of. While Einstein has always been a strong school with a well-known reputation, especially in the NY area, who wants to stay stagnant, right? He has visions to make Einstein bigger and better. With what I already see happening in the short time since he's been here, I have no doubt Einstein will continue to flourish.

I can't speak for RWJ, since I've never been there nor have any friends there. The only objective advice I could give you is to consider it higher if it offers you a scholarship and that's a big deal to you. Otherwise, Einstein has a great finance office here that works closely with students. I've never heard any einstein student having a problem borrowing $.

I could probably go on and on, but PM me if you have other questions.

+1. Go with RWJ. People get great matches from this school, and are so happy they don't have the kind of debt they would have had otherwise.

I am just about done w/my 1st year of med school and can easily echo the sentiments of those that went before me: Where you go to school does NOT matter! Unless you are in LOVE with Einstein, GO FOR THE CHEAPEST OPTION.

ps - where's the POLL?!! no one uses polls this year. you guys are so boring!! LOL / JK

4success,

Just wondering if you have made your mind up yet?

I'm just throwing this out there, but RWJ is not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. I'm sure Einstein is more expensive, but I'm graduating with 195,000 worth of debt from RWJ. So whichever school you choose, if you don't get a free ride or scholarships, prepare to be poor for awhile.

True.

If we were talking a top 10 or even top 20 school, then I would consider it further. There is no question here, IMO, go to RJW.

Einstein is where it's at man. Great reputation, and trust me you would rather be in the city! 🙂...no ulterior motives here.

so basically, if i dont' really care about money, go to einstein. but .... if i care about i gues.s. 60000 extra debt, go to RWJ??
why is it that RWJ isn't ranked on US news??? people keep sayign RWJ has great reputation, but how do i know????????

It doesn't matter! You need to find the school that is the best fit for you, so that you do well learning, acing the boards, getting good experiences in clinical years.... That's what you need for med school, and sometimes there are opportunities to get all that at a much lower price than at another place. You don't need a reputation. I know one person from RWJ - not a lot to go on - he was a great guy, loved his med school experience, and was just finishing up his ortho residency at Harvard to go back to NJ for a fellowship. He got everything he wanted out of it.

I am choosing RWJMS over AECOM. Although I loved things about both schools. If you want specifics why send me a message.

But in general the schools share a lot of similarities:
P/F the First two years
Good Research Opportunities
Good Opportunities for International Health
Easy Access to Manhattan (the rest of NYC outside the Bronx)

The match lists are very good for both schools (You wanted to know how to determine if a school is "good", take a look at the MATCHLIST!--Where are their graduates going)

Side Note: There was also a recent thread about AECOM vs. Tufts. I would definitely say AECOM >> Tufts. (In case any one was wondering comparing all three schools). Tufts is an AMAZING place as well, but I feel is there is absolutely not way to justify the cost of Tufts (this past year it was THE MOST (#1) expensive medical school in the country.
