Albert Einstein vs. Stony Brook

Hi,

I need some urgent advice. Have to decide between the two very soon. Which school will prepare for boards better, which school has better residency placements, where are students happier, where is the curriculum more student-friendly... there are many other questions i can't think of right now.

Any input about these schools would be very much appreciated.

Well. I'm at SB and didn't even consider applying at AE. So you have my background.

SB has a great match list (getting into good programs, getting into good specialties), and I feel generally happy students - I'm VERY happy at SB. I do think that we were just at or a point or two below USMLE average on step I, but that's always a tough question to answer.

Are you a city guy/gal? SB doesn't have quite the action of NY. But it's quiet.

I like it. Good luck with whatever your choice, and congrats on having the "dilemma" at all!

Hey,

I'm at SB as well but I am a third year (soon to be 4th year!). To piggy back off of Dan I think that SB is a great place.

1. Boards

Most medical schools do not teach for the boards. I have spoken to many students at other schools and we are pretty much are all in the same boat in that respect. The major differences between schools are how much time you get for studying, when you have to take the boards, etc. The majority of medical schools make you take it before 3rd year and give you ~5weeks to study. However at UPenn you take after your clinical rotations and have an "unlimited" amount of time to study. From what I remember Albert Einstein is in the majority.

Actually since I have been here at SB our classes have been doing above average.

2. Residency placement

You can look at our match list online and I am sure you can find Einstein's but it is not really necessary. We do well.

If you have a strong interest in a particular field you could probably look at the lists to see the # of students going into that field.

3. Cirriculum

Our cirriculum is very progressive and they do listen to student input. But of course sometimes they don't.

In the end there has to be something that will make you want to go to one place. If all else fails, remember that SB tuition is cheaper!
