Does anyone use an Alienware computer? If so, do you like it...etc, etc.?

If I had the money i'd LOVE to get an alienware computer. Those computers are sweet. But I'd probably opt for a desk top.. it's not often I play games on my lap top. . .

Expensive, powerful, good looking

It's not like anyone really needs an Alienware in med school, but it's nice as it is very different from the computers of other med students.

If I were on a budget, I'd probably check out Dell's line of laptop products.

Alienware products are TERRIBLY overpriced. If you want a performance laptop, I'd go with a clevo product like Sager:

Great company I've done business with on multiple occasions.

Also, Dell is good if you are on the budget (which you can't be if you are even suggesting alienware, lol). Compies are my thing so if you have any questions about them that aren't easily solved by googling, feel free to PM me and I'll try and help out between lab hours.

Peace.

I personally think powerful laptops are unbearable. Not only will it last 20 mins on batteries, weigh a ton, and suffer from overheating issues, but are no upgradable. If you want a performance computer, stick with desktops. They are always plugged to the wall, weight is no issue unless you attend LAN parties, and you can always get watercooling.

Alienware seems to have some good products out there....but they do seem very very overpriced. If you are on a budget Dell, or usually anything at Fry's seems like a good deal. They have some rather powerful computers for under $500.

As for laptops, i think they are useless unless you are in a school that regularly uses them in class. I can see it as a plus, but i think it may just wind up staying in my room if i get one.

wow this is one of the few dont get a laptop posts I have read. I feel I need to get one b/c my wife is at home, and if I will need to be at the library, study areas to focus, that is just me

I'm going to use a laptop simply because I like the option of bringing it home with me over summer/winter. They're also quite handy for getting through large, meaningless classes (or at least checking/sending mail on the go). That said, I don't currently have wireless in my laptop, and the charger is broken, so it only leaves my room twice a year (s/w). Hopefully that'll change with a new 'puter.

Right, I think laptops are meant to be taken out of your room and be used on the go. That's why if a computer is mainly in one place, you might as well get a desktop. That being said, I know a friend who got the humongous Dell XPS laptop for the sole reason of easy transport back home during breaks; otherwise, it didn't leave his room. I personally would do that a little differently. I have 1 desktop at home and 1 in my dorm room, and you can always setup a remote desktop for both computers if you need access to certain files.

Nooooo. Do not buy alienware. They are way overpriced. The BEST laptop for gaming right now is the Dell Inspiron XPS. PCGamer and CGW both agree on this. Check their reviews if ya don't believe me. My co-worker shelled out thousands for a top of the line alienware laptop. When he got it, it had a video card problem. So , he sent it back to alienware for repair. They sent it back to him and now it actually had much more problems than when he had sent it to them the first time! I told him to send it back again. He couldn't b/c now that the warranty period had passed, they refused to fix it! He wasted several thousand dollars on them! Unbelievable! 👎

I have an Alienware laptop - among the "best" that they sell. It's my second, but don't let that convince you. I have another because it is a *replacement* for the first, which was absolutely horrible and did not function properly. My experience with Alienware was so poor, it was only resolved when I spoke to the Vice President of the company. I would suggest buying a high end Dell, Voodoo, or Falcon NW over an Alienware (if that's the price range you are in).

I will never buy an Alienware again.

I agree, but I'm a tech guy and I can build my own desktop at a low price. Other people might not have that option. Desktop-replacement laptops are, though, DEFINITELY meant for specific uses. They aren't the thing you'd want to lug around daily. I used to have one that I'd keep in my room and move home with me on weekends, etc. That's their strength. As you say, they are not upgradeable (though that's changed a bit now). Personally, I have one desktop that's a power machine and a portable laptop for classes. If you know how to shop/build/etc. the total price of two compies can be very similar to the price of one beastly laptop.

The Dell XPS is a great machine, but unless battery life is a very significant issue for you, the Sagers are far superior. In addition, their pricing is much more reasonable. But again, it depends on your needs; if you want battery life you might not want to get a beastly laptop in the first place.
