Hey,

I'm in the process of buying a stethoscope. I really like the black edition ones, where the entire thing is black, not just the tubing. I was all set on getting one of these, when a friend told me that she wouldn't like her doctor to have an all black steth. She mentioned the symbolism of black to evil/death and how silver/lighter colors are more "clinically appropriate." What do y'all think? The all black one looks so damn cool, but I don't want to freak future patients out, lol. Thanks.

In some cultures, white is the color of death, so maybe white coats shouldn't be used anymore.

Get what you like best, don't make a big deal about look, unless you're trying to pull off a Kelso and have a golden steth... then that might be unwise.

I have one of the black editions - no one has ever said a thing about it. If you like the way it looks, then go for it.

Why would a premed need a stethoscope? And worry about the color? Sweet mother of Abraham Lincoln!

Who cares. Just don't have a naked picture or something engraved on it.

lmao, you know I just want to be able to get some practice in now so I'm ahead of the curve when I start medical school in two years.

sarcasm aside though, I'm starting med school in about two months, so I think it's a relevant concern 🙂

still, is a concern about the color really a CONCERN?

lol, seeing how a concern is something that relates or pertains to a person; business; or affair (thank you dictionary.com), I think that yes, it is a concern. 🙂

Look, this issue about the ramifications of getting a certain colored steth weren't in my mind until my friend voiced her concerns (definition number 6, lol) 🙄. It made me think about something I hadn't considered before, and I just wanted to see the opinions of others.

Thanks so much for your help, lol.

I highly doubt that as you go to listen to a patients heartbeat they are going to be thinking, "OMG!!!!OMF'inG!!!!!! Hes got a black stethoscope.....I'm gonna die right here in this room, for he is death!!!!"

That is so cool. 😎

It's even the model that I was going to buy. Thank you for pointing this out.

This thread made me think of the tennisball thread about "omg do dept heads use gold steths" lol

I hardly doubt anyone would care. I cant get too excited about a steth...sadly. However my father was rockin this beast at one point and I thought it was pretty nice! http://www.allheart.com/litt3200.html

Scroll down....they have a steth with ipod connectivity now!!

[some of the responses to] this thread made me think of how many d-bags are on sdn, lol.

Upon further reflection, I do concede that the black stethoscope will contrast nicely with your white coat and make an excellent fashion statement in the wards and in the bars as well!

you for real had to look up "concern?"

I'd probably go for the Harvey Elite before the cardio III anyway. I have a cardio III and I'm kind of lukewarm to its sound quality. I hear stuff, but I have to listen just a little harder than some of the other steths I've used.

I knew your obnoxious self would post something. I obviously know what the word means, was just trying to fight douchebag-ery with douchebag-ery. fall back son, lol.

anyways, for the people that actually responded. I appreciate the input. I think I'm going to go black and not look back.

Thanks!

don't worry about bleargh, he always posts angry unhelpful posts. I ignore anyone who has time to post over 5000 times in a single year....he is probably just "compensating"

I would have no idea what type of steth to buy either, but the black looks cool man, goodluck with med school

haha, so true.

Thanks though, man. Good luck to you too!

you're right, i'm so angry right now i can barely contain myself, what am i 'compensating' for exactly? 🙄

and it takes so long to post this two sentence post. 🙄🙄

So I went to the bookstore a while ago and was just idly looking at the stethoscopes. The lady in the counter told me that this school in particular (not the one I will attend, but the one at which I work) recommends its students to get the Littmann Cardio III. I suppose it would be safer to wait until you are asked to get one or inquire what your school would want you to have.

I would also not worry too much about some people's interpretation of the color of your stethoscope. It looks pretty damn cool in all black! I think I might get one for myself just this color...

so true. bleargh writes 16 posts/day and almost none of them are useful to anyone.

maybe the facepalm avatar is a constant reminder to himself.

i wasnt trying to be a douchbag, mine was a genuine question. I couldnt understand how this could be a concern, but like you said it is YOUR concern. Likewise you probably wouldnt understand some of my concerns. Very valid point.... carry on.

I am going to have to disagree. I have seen several posts on the mcat q&a section by bleargh that have been very useful to many others, including me.

You did say ALMOST though....

you did say almost though....

😉

he/she used to contribute back in 09 but the most useless people on this forum seem to be the ones who have thousands of posts and an undeserved sense of superiority because of it (there are some exceptions though).
