Allopathic COMLEX Friendly Residency's?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi there....well i dont have any magic number for you but as a fellow DO going into an allopathic residency...i had no problem getting interviews. Decent student...average board scores but i did take the usmle. now i do believe you can get a number of interviews with just comlex...i am a firm believer and have posted numerous times how important i feel it is to take the usmle. you will be doing yourself a disservice if u you dont. its not any more work than taking the comlex(take them within a week or so of each other) and its a better test....and it can only help you get more interviews. no one forces you to report it if you do awful...which is doubtful. It's just easier for some programs to compare you to other md students if you take it....thats all...dont let people tell you its b/c they dont accept comlex or DO's. If you really dont want to take Usmle than i would focus on the New York and Pennsylavania, ohio, michigan programs...they are known to be very DO friendly...and i might add have excellent programs in all states. Feel free to PM me if u want to know where i applied, interviewed, etc. Oh and i only had one program ask me about whats its like to be a DO student during an interiview...no one else seem to care. Good luck.

A guy a year ahead of me matched to Florida (Gainesville) with only COMLEX this year. Nevada's new program at Las Vegas also seems very DO friendly...

I'm going into 4th year now (as a DO student) and have decided to take USMLE b/c I want to make sure I don't miss out had I not taken USMLE.

I took only the COMLEX. I applied to about ~40 programs, and got interviews ~ 20.

The best way to look for DO friendly programs is to go to emramatch.org, and click on each program and see how many have had DOs in the past 5 years.

I think the programs are doing a great job at looking at applicants as a package.

I only took the COMLEX and got 13 interview invites out of 15 apps...and three were real long shots.

Granted, I did very well on that thing they call an exam, but it can be done.

Well, if you can still take the USMLE I recommend it, why would you want to put yourself behind the eight ball.

Can you match without it? Sure.

In my class this year 5 of us matched into MD programs, 2 didn't take the USMLE. However, those two matched and only got interviews at places they had rotated through.

Also, check out the websites of programs that you are interested in and see if they accept the COMLEX. Call the programs if they don't.

Did you mean 2 didn't take the USMLE?

I used FREIDA and emailed the program director directly or the "person to contact" to see if they accepted the COMLEX, and if they preferred the USMLE. Almost all the programs (NY/NJ areas) said they accept COMLEX and the USMLE isnt needed for DO students. Of course, most suggested rotating with them.

I think that the phrase "Know thy self" fits really well for this topic, and really the whole application process as a whole.

Do you have a strong app, ok app, stellar app, etc.?

How do you know what you have? Just find an attending at an EM program (preferably a PD) and ask them where you stand. I did this during third year, b/c I thought they would feel more prone to give me an honest appraisal when I was not in the midst of my application year.

If you have a good overall application the boards are certainly not the straw to break the camel's back. A thought that one should never overlook is that you CAN take USMLE Step II w/o step I...at least you could as of last year.

Don't tell me my business son!

It's all ball bearings nowadays.

BADVB that is a f***ing excellent quote. Glad to see some people still have some good taste.

And look at this window it is full of guk.
