[Forgive me if this has previously been addressed.]

I would like to know how difficult my path might be as a DO desiring to enter an academic allopathic neuro residency. I notice that the vast majority of current residents at these programs (a few I am considering are UVA, UNC, Duke, GW, etc.) are MDs. This may be an ignorant question, but are there any programs that are known to simply not accept DOs? Or is it just a statistical thing?

Thanks for any input.

It really depends on the program. The Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins and the Mayo Clinic are known to accept DO's who are extremely qualified. Other programs like Duke will not accept a DO in general, because of the stigma. That's just the reality with being a DO. You just have to accept that certain programs are not going to take you for elitist reasons. But you shouldn't focus on that fact because there are an overwhelming number of reputable neurology programs that will take DO's.

Just a quick point:
I actually met a pediatric neuro resident during grand rounds at Duke last year, so they have at least accepted one. He was a PCOM grad.

Do you or anyone else have a feelling for UNC-Chapel Hill's neuro dept? I would love to return to my alma mater, but I'm not sure if they're of the elitist mindset when it comes to D.O.s.

Thanks
