alternate list/ wait list/ on hold

hey guys, does anyone know anything about how the alternate list or the on hold list works? Like how long does these list actually gets (the chances of you getting in) and from these lists how do the schools pick the applicants to fill the empty slots? Is it fair game for all those who are on the list? Also, how soon or when is the latest should we hear from them? Thanks guys.
