Hey guys,

I had my interview with ICO on Nov. 3rd and I just got a letter back saying I'm an alternate candidate now. Can anyone offer up any past stories or advice as far as that goes? Is it early enough in the cycle that I should still have a solid chance, or is there a long list of candidates ahead of me by this point? I'm really irked that even though my stats and extra-curriculars were very good, I don't have a seat guaranteed for me.

Thanks, Dan

sorry that you didnt get a seat, but being an alternate isnt that bad!
was your interview bad, or what happened?

My interview went okay... but I had a minor in possession ticket from when I was 18, and another infraction(non-alcohol related) from last year. I could kinda tell it scared the interviewer, but I said the only thing I really could've said: "It's in my past and I can only grow from it". I've got another interview at SCO next week and I can only hope I'll do better there. At this point I'm in the mindset that if they don't want me there I don't want to be there.

Good for you.. that you are able to put those things in your past, and know you can do better...

so what are your stats, and who was your interviewer?

Had a 3.4 overall GPA and a 3.2 science from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and a 380TS 370AA OAT score. I also shadowed/volunteered for an Optometrist for 2 days a week over 2-3 months or so. I pretty much thought I'd be a lock with those numbers so i guess let that serve as a warning to all out there to never be too confident.

did you apply to more than just ICO.

I think you have a really good chance of being accepted off the alternate list. Since your stats are so good, I would assume that you are at the top of that list plus its kind of early in the app process. Maybe, you can call them and ask them why you are on the alternate list. You went to U of I (yay Illini pride!) and its a really competitive school and almost everyone who applied to ICO from U of I in the past has been accepted eventually one way or another. They love U of I kids. So, I would just wait and do well on the other interviews.

Maybe this is silly, but I didn't know that the schools have access to misdemeanors. I guess it makes sense, I just hadn't thought about it.
