So I have been wondering how to spend my spring break and I would LOVE to volunteer with animals (obviously). I know there are lots of programs that send you abroad to work with animals, but they are usually expensive and I will not have a lot of extra money.

My question to you guys is if anyone knows of any programs that are animal based that run an "alternative spring break" type program. They would need to:

-Be 10 days or less (March 12th-20th)
-In the continental US/Canada
-Provide housing (at low cost is acceptable)
-Provide contact with animals

I know I can volunteer at a local shelter, but I have done that and am looking for something new or slightly exotic.

If anyone has any ideas, I would LOVE to hear them!

I don't know of any specific programs, but you might think about places that need volunteers and get in touch with them about it. They might be able to direct you towards inexpensive housing. I know, for example, somewhere near or on Padre Island in Texas there is a Marine animal rehab center that people can volunteer at. My younger sister tried to do this when she and my parents went down on her spring break, but they required their volunteers to be over 18 and my sister hadn't realized that. (As far as housing goes, she and my parents camped on the beach...but that's not really a safe option for someone by themselves). There are probably lots of other places like that around the country. So, basically, you might be able to put together a package yourself based upon where you want to go and what you want to get experience with.
