Hello,
I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions on the topic.
I’ve been a PIC at an independent pharmacy for over 5 years now. The pay is good, the employer and co-workers are great, the job security is good too. However, it does feel like I have reached the top here. I know let’s say 95% of the things I am dealing with and there is no room for improvement.
I work part-time, so I have some free time for something else for now. I have the possibility of working full time at the current job, but I want to try something new. The pay is not the major factor, as I would be fine with anything over let’s say 30/hour ( I live in LA, so less won’t really make much sense) And I do have small kids, so it can’t be something that requires you to prioritize work over family too much.
I am a foreign graduate, so I have a BS in Pharmacy instead of PharmD, so the first option would be spend the free time I have on education. I can get a MS in pharmaceutical sciences on-line. (My GPA is 3.85, and I am a good learner) However, I am not sure it would be worth it. I am not a big fan of fancy degrees just for the sake of having a degree. Would this type of a degree help with pharmaceutical industry/clinical research/pbm positions?
Or regulatory writing (there is a MS with this specification). Although for that my language might be a barrier.
Besides the regular Pharmasict duties I have a couple of years of hospice/adult care facilities consulting experience, insurance contracting/audit/appeal experience and some research assistant position (this one was in a foreign country).
The second option would be to get some sort of a industry/research position, but it has to be part-time and probably hard to find.
The third option would be getting some supplemental degree, like biostatistics/IT/public health to complement the Pharmacy degree.
Anyway, to make a long story short I am looking for alternatives to Pharmacist position, that would have a potential for growth and be a bit flexible as the family goes first. Again flexibility, growth potential and life work balance would be more important than the pay to a reasonable extend.

Thank you!

I'm graduating soon in Las Vegas and would like to ask you about independent pharmacy in LA. Can I send you msg? Thanks

I have been told by some other user over here that he found many independent gigs through Craig’s list.

Random question, but how is the job market for pharmacists in Las Vegas? Just curious

I'm not sure. I've heard 60% of class 2019 of my school either got a job or into residency. The rest is still looking. My class size is 140.

Sounds like maybe a slightly better scenario than the job market in the southeast. I'm guessing only residency grads are being hired for any hospital positions these days?

I'm interested in retail only. So I don't know anything about hospital but one of my classmates tries to get a job in Kaiser where her mom works as a nurse and they require her to do residency first.
I've heard there are still job in Central Valley of CA. Most of my classmates including me are from CA.

I see. I'll look into that. Thanks!

Just be careful - you can find all sorts of stuff on Craig’s list.

I tried to sell a car on Craig’s list once and it quickly devolved into a proposition from a random groups to engage in a menajatua (spelling?) with 3 men and 4 women... I think they needed to even the gender balance.

I’m just sayin.... Craigslist is weird.

Ah the old ménage à huit, eh? Sounds a lot more fun than a used car

Now....THIS is a HOOT! I think it means "dinner for three"

Thank you!

Optum or Kaiser Downey have entertaining piecework though not for a foreign BS. As expensive as it is, the MS at USC tends to open local doors. If you do go for biostatistics, you will need to get your math back up through calculus and linear algebra at minimum to avoid getting tracked into the Mickey major.

But, you do realize that if you want to go for this dream, you are going to have to sacrifice flexibility, growth, and life-work balance to make it work? If you are not willing to sacrifice, then I think you should find a non-career occupation or hobby.

Thank you for the reply!
I am definitely not ready to sacrifice any of the above. However, I am still hopeful to find some part-time profession that would be pharmacy related, but not being a pharmacist. I did go through the degree evaluation process here to get a license and kind of got stuck working as a pharmacist, because at the time it felt like a reasonable way to go. My degree in my home country is probably more equivalent to a pharmaceutical science degree here, then pharmacy itself. That’s the reason I am looking for a different career path. Math has always been my strong side, so I am looking into biostatistics/ data science. The question would the degree in it be helpful for pharmaceutical industry or not. I can use the connections to get volunteering/entry level job in a small firm. So for now that’s probably the question: to put free time into a degree or some semi relevant experience.

Thank you!

Biostats is definitely useful in pharma industry, every company has at least a few people doing that. Not sure how in demand it is, though. Do a job search for biostatistics in your desired area on LinkedIn to see how many job postings there are...
