Has anyone had any problems with MDs not liking to work with DOs? I worked in a clinic where the MDs and DOs treated each other like equals, which is the way it should be. With all the posts, mostly from some of the pre-allo students, it made me wonder if they continue to be bias against DOs when they are doctors.

My opinion is that it really depends on region. For example, I go to LECOM, in Erie, PA, we have LECOM, a small osteopathic community hospital, and many many DO's, even on staff in the larger allopathic hospitals. In the Erie area, the community is aware of DO's and are not ignorant of osteopathy; therefore, DO=MD in Erie, PA

Also I have noticed that since many of the people that were in the first few classes of LECOM when it started back in the early nineties are now just getting finished with their residencies, new DO preactices are popping up all over the place in PA!! Also consider the fact the PA has PCOM in addition to LECOM, pumping out double the DO's

So in PA, DO's are plentiful and have seen them work side by side with many MD's without much conflict, how it is in other places, I am not sure!

Well, hopefully those people remain "pre-allo"...I'd be more than willing to work with any DO.

All of the MDs and pre-MDs I've personally known have either been incredibly supportive, or have hardly noticed and never made a big deal about my decision to go DO.

Absolutely not...eyebrows sometimes get raised with DO program residents mix it up when allopathic residents (rotate together).
Other than than DO's in MD programs are just too common. DO attendings that are subspecialists are all over, so seeing them in the biggest hospitals is common place.

In contrast, I think there is a certain "don't go there" attitude toward exclusive DO hospitals.

I agree with Freeeeeedom. At my program, USF EM's residency, there is me and another DO. In the whole hospital, out of like 400 or some crazy # of residents, there are maybe 10-20 DOs. We do get Orthopedic DO residents from MI that come down for 6 months at a time... they do get funny looks (mainly because EVERY orthopedic resident is a DO) but in general are treated very well and as equals. There is absolutely no bias against the DOs here at my hospital. Some of our attendings are DOs as well.
Once you get further and further along in your medical training (especially 4th year of medical school) you'll realize that there are few biases against DOs... but of course yo'ull always run across a fwe MDs who absolutely hate you. But you'll always run across a few people who absolutely hate blacks, Jews, Asians... etc.

So I guess if you're a half black, half Asian DO yer really screwed.

Freeeedom!, aka Capt. Freedom. aka Modeerf Niatpac. Your posts, past and present, are pretty funny. Freeeeeeeeeeeeedom for everyone!

In my rotations so far, I have not seen any MD's who do not like to work with DO's. They all work together equally and value each other's input. There may still be some old-school MD's out there who don't like DO's, but I have yet to see any.

I'm a DO student and I do get the feeling that the whole "equal but seperate" thing is getting to be too much. I'd agree that there are a bunch of DO's in allopathic residencies and not too many MD's in osteopathic residencies. But in defense of the DO's, the MD's don't have the pressure to take both boards. I'm personally taking both because I want more options but I'm happy w/ the route I've taken.
