Hey everyone,
I am thinking about research opportunities, and really want to do something that I am passionate about. My Grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and this is one area I would really like to spend some time with. I looked around on the internet and didn't really find anything, so I figured I'd come to you guys.
So the question: Do you know of any undergrad programs for Alzheimer's research?

Do you mean universities that do a lot of Alzheimer's research? I don't know about undergrad programs, but the lab in which I work does AD-related research that has been in the media recently. We have undergrads who volunteer or do work-study in our lab, as well. I would guess that universities with a med school will be your best bet,, so you could check the geriatric psychiatry departments and see if anyone is doing AD research. A lot of major research universities will also probably be connected with AD research centers.

I agree with the above - check with local medical schools (if there are any near you). It may take a little digging but you will probably be able to find something - Alzheimer's is a hot topic right now. The med school's site should have a listing of departments... you should be able to determine the focus of their work from the description on their web page. Alternatively, you can try searching PubMed for "Alzheimer's [med school name]" and see what comes up in the citations.

If you are looking for a specific Alzheimer's program, I doubt it. Just go to universities websites and search for professors that do Alzheimer research.

Amyloid Beta, sirtuins, and neurofibrillary tangles may be useful search terms.

Thanks for the info. During the school year the closest Med School, is the University of Arizona, which is 3 hours away...
Good news, when I'm back home over the summer, I'm close to tons of great schools. I did a couple quick searches, and I am starting to find some more info...
Thanks

Bump! I share the same motivation as OP, was wondering what kind of specialties I should be looking into as a MD researcher?

MD research can be of any subject matter and are not limited to "close to clinical", experimental, or translational research.

MD research can be as fundamental and basic as PhD research.

Problem is you have to consider that if you want to do research you should really go for the PhD. PhD's are trained to be scientists from the beginning. My personal opinion, I think PhD researchers are usually better scientists.

I worked for Blanchette Rockefeller Neuroscience institute and they are now located in West Virginia University. We were working on Alzeimer's disease. Not sure what you are looking for but you can check it out.

The docs I work with doing AD research are usually neurologists or psychiatrists (specifically geriatric psychiatrists).
