Sorry if this is the wrong spot or not allowed but I am writing my personal statement and want to include a story from the practice I volunteered at. It involves a patient and their ailment, as long as I don’t mention a name it’s allowed, correct? I want to make sure before I violate HIPPA!

Generally if you don't include any identifying information including geographical information, you're safe.

I'm not a lawyer though nor am i privy with the complexities of HIPAA so be careful.

Edit: phone typos

Thanks for your reply. I made sure to keep it as vague as possible I literally just say she was a woman with back pain who struggled speaking english

Being familiar with HIPAA due to previous employment, make sure it isn't a super-rare disease either. Talking only 200 people in the world with an official diagnosis.

But if the patient had a run-of-the-mill trauma (broken bone) then, as long as you don't release name, geographic location, or anything like that, then it's fine.
