Am I done for? No hope for medical school?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
so 2.9 ugrad to 3.4 masters with a ~516 MCAT

what state? would you be willing to retake any pre-reqs to raise GPA

With those numbers I would say you should be competitive for some DOs if you apply now and might have a chance at your state MDs. Some schools use the cGPA to screen so you might want to do research.

With a 516 he should be competitive for most MD schools, assuming good ec

His GPA is incredibly low and the SMP of a 3.4 is not stellar. For most MD schools a 3.4 is low and that is from SMP, his actual cGPA is 2.9 which is likely what a lot of schools will look at. For DO that is too low, but the MCAT might be able to help counter it.

so it depends on your state; did you go to an elite undergraduate? why the low grades?

Depression, ADHD, I would say. Severe social isolation, I had no friends at all, literally...No it was a state school, I'm in New Mexico, but currently work in Texas, thank you all.

Are you a Texas resident? If so, I think your chances might be a bit better. Start with TCOM and also apply to all of your state MD schools.

Yes, I think texas, thank you, I will do. Oh well, should not have done smp, made a lot of mistakes in life

Don't beat yourself up man, you killed your MCAT which is a stellar accomplishment. That score should be able to help overcome your cGPA, your SMP while not great, is not a red flag. I have seen people here kicked out or just failing out, that would be bad. Best of luck 🙂

I'm a bit removed from the application process but I would think that your MCAT score is a better predictor of your ability/potential to do well in med school. I'd be surprised if you didn't get in somewhere

I did a special master's program and F'ed up bad. Ended with a 3.4 GPA. Had to retake a class. Have very low college GPA (2.9). Am I done for? Got good MCAT, 95 percentile.
Chances best with your state MD school, and DO schools if you apply broadly. Despite your high MCAT, my school might pass on you. AZCOM will probably take you.

I have yet to hear from any SDNer who reinvented themselves with a pattern like yours, for MD.

Honestly, I'd suggest you fix the root problems before applying -- Clearly you're bright enough to succeed in medical school, but if depression, ADHD (untreated?) and social isolation were enough to tank your undergrad and SMP GPAs, they'll be enough to tank your medical school performance. While you might be able to get in somewhere now, not making it through the first time is an unrecoverable problem.

Get some therapy and learn to love and care for yourself before you undertake this incredibly difficult endeavor. Once you can fix the root causes of the problems you've had, you'll be a much stronger applicant and be able to perform to your capacity.

Best of luck to you --

Thanks a lot to you and everyone else. I'm not concerned about DO vs MD, I'd be happy with either one. Thanks a lot everyone.

I have several Adcom colleagues who would swoon with that MCAT score, but from our own experience, people who struggle with an SMP (as did OP) struggle in our program.

So SMP performance outweighs MCAT score?

So SMP performance outweighs MCAT score?

I'd suspect it's more a case of any one negative being enough to call the other positives into question. Succeeding in an SMP can support the contention that "My undergrad GPA (or MCAT -- pick one) is not indicative of what I can do in -- see?" The trouble here is that the OP was trying to prove that his undergrad GPA was not accurate -- yet didn't really prove that...

By any chance are you a NM resident?

Are you a Native American? If so, then you would likely be interviewed by UNM SOM

SDNers are strongly advised not to have a moth-like starry-eyed infatuation with high MCATs alone. That's another way of saying "yes". Here you have someone who was in a an audition for med school. They flubbed their lines.

Again, we and others have learned the hard way that students who do poorly in an SMP struggle in med school...to the point of failing COMLEX and/or having to repeat OMSI.

The wise Doktermom gets it!

The "audition" analogy is perfect. That's precisely what an SMP is.
