hi, i don't normally post here but a recent visit to an optometrist has me worried. after he finished the eye exam he told me my prescription has nearly doubled and that i can no longer see 20/20. he also said that if my eyesight wasn't correctable i'd be almost legally blind.

my questions are- am i forever doomed to bad eyesight? can this be corrected with surgery when i'm older? also, because my eyes are really bad will they continue to get worse or stay the same? he said something about eyesight leveling off at about age 16, that's how old i am, what exactly does he mean by that? and finally, i just got my new glasses today and they came with a slip of paper that i assume he used when he examined my eyes. can someone tell me what these numbers that are on it mean? and what DS means?

right eye

sphere- -6.25

cylinder- DS

left eye

sphere- -6.00

cylinder- -0.50

axis- 062

thanks. and sorry for all the questions 🙂

Don't worry too much. I would be well past legally blind if it were not for correction. In fact, corrected, I still can't really read 20/20.

Well, your eyes aren't going to get any better.

can this be corrected with surgery when i'm older?

You will have to get checked out by a professional, but that is when the time comes for you which won't be for a while.

also, because my eyes are really bad will they continue to get worse or stay the same? he said something about eyesight leveling off at about age 16, that's how old i am, what exactly does he mean by that?

Not sure about eye sight leveling off at 16, my eyes have progressively gotten worse and I'm 22 now.

and finally, i just got my new glasses today and they came with a slip of paper that i assume he used when he examined my eyes. can someone tell me what these numbers that are on it mean? and what DS means?

This is your prescription. The numbers refer to the power of the lenses used to correct you. You have some nice myopia there, but don't worry too much, I'm about 2.5X worse than that. 😛

See the bolded.

Myopia means you're nearsighted.

edit: DS means diopters sphere. You don't have astigmatism in that eye.

I know of people much worse than this. And legally blind is a term only used when your eyesight is not CORRECTABLE to better than 20/200 (in the good eye). So your OD misused the term so to speak.

To the OD's credit, he did say, "if his eyes sight wasn't correctable," if that is verbatim I don't know. =)

myopia is that condition in which you can't see far objects (i think you're actually aware of this) because your eye is too long to focus them.

if your myopia will stop at this age is not predictable..probably it will slow down and you won't worsen too much..that's because your visual system is finishing its development and is not going to elongate anymore.
it's possible to undergo some laser therapy, but you need a professional opinion and evaluation.

anyway, don't worry, your myopia is not that bad!🙂
