I was at my classmate's house today. He's got this huge dog, easily 200 lbs. The doggie was being too friendly with me, and he scratched the inside of my forearm with his paw. I spent like 2 min inspecting the scratches in the bathroom, and quickly clean the site with water and soap. I didn't ask my friend whether the dog is immunized against rabies, because, come on, it's just not polite.

There's a tiny tiny abrasion at the site. 0.5mm x 1mm at most. I could see the underlying tissue that's kinda red. There was no bleeding at all.

Should I be concerned with this episode? I know rabies has almost 100% mortality if it develops. Should I go as far as getting the rabies shots?

Yes...most definitely..I mean I know that there is no chance at all that a 200 lb friendly dog hasn't scratched the owner already. Either that or they are hiding the photophobia and all very well.

I recommend prompt amputation of the offending limb. No time for anesthesia.

Seriously though...first of all, you shouldn't be seeking medical advice on this forum. Secondly, you're apparently a medical student, and you come to a website filled future physicians and physicians with this weak understanding of the pathophysiology and transmission methods of rabies? Come on, a simple Google search is in order. You might as well come on here, stated that you just swam in the same pool as a guy with AIDS, and asked if you should get tested for HIV.

 THAT bored huh?

I would consult your primary care physician, even if you have high-deductible heath insurance coverage.

Last I checked, dogs do not salivate underneath their claws.

As med student you should know that your supposed to suck the poison out (but swallow so you create IgM antibodies) then urinate on your arm 🙄
