Hello all, I was just curious as to what perceived weaknesses I may have as a potential applicant to medical school. I've gone through a year of school now and I suppose here are my stats and activities:

3.55 overall GPA (4.0 non-BCPM, 3.4 BCPM); Biology and German double major

I realize this needs to be raised. I had a 3.75 first term and let it drop because of laziness second term. I am currently taking summer classes to raise it up to 3.6+ and after next semester, I hope to be at a 3.7+ or so GPA. I'm going to continue trying to rack up 4.0's and hit a 3.9 by graduation or so.

Medical Translation - 100 hours (including medical document translation, seminars given about certain diseases in another language, translation work for various centers and clinics)

Eye clinic - 50 hours ("diagnosed" simple diseases for the homeless and others, provided free resources and guidance to them, and collected/distributed glasses when possible)

Fraternity - 100 hours (as a community service chair)

School Badminton Team - No idea on the hour count. I play and compete.

Linguistics Research - I started doing research with a professor here this summer and plan on continuing until I graduate. I am considering picking up another research project (perhaps in molecular toxicology), but I think the time commitment may be too great.

Anonymous Email Counseling Group - 20 hours (It's physically a club on campus that offers peers a place to seek counseling.)

Misc.: I am fluent in Mandarin Chinese, English, Spanish, and will be fluent in German shortly enough! 🙂 I also speak two Chinese dialects, but not fluently.

I fully intend on applying DO and MD and broadly as well. I also realize there is a complete lack of shadowing and I will get on that shortly.

What's your MCAT? There are many people with 3.0's that get incredible MCATs, and there are 4.0's that do poorly. Unfortunately, this evil standardized test will help in determining your competitiveness for a coveted spot in med school.

By the way, yes, you are on the right track. You can easily raise up a 3.55/3.4 over 2 years.

Since you intend to apply both DO/MD your sGPA is kinda low but your good.
EC's are good except you need some clinical experience (patient contact) and some shadowing would help as well.

So far your good to go, also fluent in many languages is a big plus.

I'm actually a rising second year, so I haven't taken the MCAT yet. When I do translations, I'm actually physically in the room doing the translation from doctor to patient. Does that count as clinical experience? (If so, what can I do to get more clinical experience besides shadowing? I do plan on doing that soon. A job seems hard to maintain with school and everything else I do.)

Can anyone chime in on whether or not translating counts as clinical..? (In the context of being the medium between doctor/patient in the room)
