Hey guys,

I am currently a junior biochemistry major at a mid tier state school. Personally, I believe that I am on track to be a solid applicant once I apply to medical school(which will be next year after I graduate). However, my PI (who is also on our pre-med committee here) seems to think that I am not on track to be a great candidate. She has me fairly concerned as I was quite confident in my ability as a applicant prior to this conversation.

Here is what I have done:
GPA > 3.95
Lab Experience: 1.5 years including SURF. I will also be working on a senior thesis this summer/next year. I have already put in thousands of hours and my thesis will require much more. I may get published, not sure yet.
Clinical Experience: EMT for 1.5 years now. Approximately 600 volunteer hours and I will continue to volunteer until I graduate.
-I have also volunteered at a hospital for about a year and a half. I also plan to do this until I graduate.
Shadowing: About 20 hours so far. I plan to shadow a few more specialties for about 20 or so more hours.

At this point, I feel as though the major thing I am lacking is a true leadership position. I plan to become a Crew Chief at my EMS service within the next year. I believe that will fill the void in my application at this point.

Do you guys feel that I will be a solid applicant? Is there anything else that I am lacking?

Thank you in advance for the advice.

Don't listen to this bullcrap. Prove her wrong 😎

Thanks for the advice, guys.

Maybe get some non-clinical volunteering and crush your MCAT. You'll be fine

Looks solid, just make sure it means something to you and know how to explain that both on paper and out loud. Take your mcat prep seriously and stay on course! You will do great! GL
