Hi everyone,

I'm currently a sophomore at one of the top public schools in the country, majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry. I had a pretty rough first semester due to some mental health issues, leading to a cGPA of 3.13 by the end of my freshman year. I know that I'm going to have to work really hard to bring that up to at least a 3.4, hopefully a 3.5 by the time I apply to MD programs during my junior year. Is it still reasonable for me to apply to med school, or did I already lower my chances significantly? I've volunteered at a hospital for over 4 years now (started in high school), and currently volunteer in peds (with direct patient contact). I also am a VP of an organization for kids with cancer, and started research in a genetic medicine lab 5 months ago under the guidance a post-doctoral mentor. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Additionally, I took physics at another state school this summer and plan on transferring the grades in. At my school, my transfer grades won't count towards my gpa, but I was wondering if the AMCA factors the grades into your gpa when you apply? I ended up doing well, so this would actually benefit me.

3.13 freshman year isn't terrible, relatively speaking (could be a 2.13). As long as you get at least 2 consecutive years of a high gpa to get the upward trend, you'll be fine. And any college courses you have taken will be accounted for in your AMCAS gpa
