hey guys,
i've been working on my secondaries for a couple weeks,
i plan on turning in most, if not all of my secondaries in by the end of this week, or next week at latest
but i'm just wondering,
am i really late as it is?
reading this forum, it seems a lot of people have been complete for a while and gotten interviews/accepted
I'm tryin to take the time to write some good essays, but at the same time I'm feeling really rushed and anxious
should i just turn in the mediocre essays asap? or should i take my time and make em better?

I really hope you're not too late, because I'm not even verified yet! It doesn't sound like tons of people have interviews though, I think you will be OK.

Yea I'm in almost the same boat as you. I just turned in applications for CCOM, DMU, VCOM, WVSOM, and planning to finish MSUCOM's application later this week. I don't think we're necessarily late, but just... a little behind the first round of applicants. But I know how you feel- I feel so behind schedule because people are already being interviewed!! 😳

I haven't seen interviews scheduled past 9/30 so I think you're ok. I'm still waiting to get verified. Should be in a few days for sure according to everybody else.

I'd like to welcome you to what we call the "SDN Effect", where being constantly surrounded by panicked, paranoid pre-meds makes you feel like your application is too weak and too late.

The overachievers make a lot of noise in here, but really, they do accept applications up to the deadline, which is still a ways away. Yes, if you interview early your chances are better because there are more seats available, but unless you need a miracle to get in to a school, it shouldn't make that much of a difference.

Take your time on your essays. Don't dawdle, but make sure you're happy with them before you turn them in. In the meantime, look at the people in here as motivation, not a ticking time bomb.

I couldn't agree more. If you're here on SDN, consider yourself ahead of the game as it is! Work those essays and turn them in when you feel like they're ready, because if you rush and send in mediocre ones you might have to wait a whole year before submitting again! All of this application stuff can get overwhelming sometimes but just remember that by filling out your secondaries in September, you're already ahead of the game. Grab yourself a beer and relax!... then smooth out the edges on those essays 👍

Thanks for the responses
I feel a lot more relaxed now

i hope you're not late cause then that means i'm really late!! i decided to apply for this yr just recently and i'm going to take the JAN MCAT so i'm hoping im not interviewing for waitlist spots. I would be graduating from undergrad in 3 yrs so i wouldnt mind doing a yer of research if i didnt get in but i suggest getting your personal letter and letters of rec out now so that you can get that out of the way. 🙂

is it getting too late for someone who has below average stats to just start submitting their app? i feel like maybe i should just try next year :-(.

What do you consider below average?? And no its not too late.

3.6 non science, 2.85 science, 3.3 cum, 22Q MCAT. :-(. I've been working on my personal statement since the spring (I had a class where we had to write one). The teacher said it sounded fine, but when I had other people read it, they were saying that a bunch of things needed to be fixed. So I've been trying to get it perfect and that's whats holding me back. I also retook the MCAT on Aug 22 so those scores will be in soon. I'm hoping if I finish my PS this week and submit to the schools I think I have a chance in, then I can add others once I get my (hopefully) higher MCAT scores in.

If you submit in Mid September I don't think it will be too late but October would be pushing it.

I would call the schools that you're interested in and find out if you would have a chance with them.

This might be a really dumb question, but what do I actually ask? I'm interested in applying and want to know if I still have a chance?

Call or email the schools and ask if you are competitive enough to be a successful applicant at their school. And if you are not competitive enough, then ask what stats would make you competitive. Something to that affect. lol

*sigh* I called a few and now I kinda wish I hadn't... I just really hope my MCAT retake can save my ass.

What happened?? You can PM me if you don't want to say it here. Don't get down, it will happen OR you can just apply next year with me.😀

No, I don't mind sharing my business with everyone. I figure it'll help someone out. I hope, lol.

The lady at AZCOM said I'd probably be put on hold, not get an interview, but if I became competitive (which I took to mean that if the other applicants sucked as much as I did), then maaaaaaybe I'd get an interview. And told me the avg MCAT was 27. So I asked if my chances would be better if I got a 27 on the retake, and she said yes. This was my first call, so it was a little bit disorganized, and I should've known that obviously if I did better my chances would be better lol.

At CCOM she basically told me the averages (27, 3.53 cum, 3.45 sci) and to figure it out myself hahahah. Like, "these are the averages, so you can see where you stand relative to that".

At KCUMB I was told they don't interview anyone with less than 3.0. So that was quite a short conversation.

I emailed RVU and in it I asked for an opinion on whether I should try for this year, or put it off until next year. She suggested I bring up my science gpa to at least a 3 before applying, which would mean I'd have to apply next year.

Even with everything, I think I'll still apply this year anyways. I know it might sound dumb, but my boyfriend keeps telling me everyone has a chance because you never know what it is they're looking for beyond numbers. My original plan had been to apply, see how it goes, go do a post bacc (either apply for one or do one on my own) if I don't get in, and then apply again once I'm done with that.

I just figured out what I'd need to graduate, and I'd still have enough space to realistically retake 2 science courses which would def help my gpa. So even if I didn't get in this time around, since those classes would be in the spring and that's late and all, at least it would help me out for next time.

Well if you plan to apply anyway, I would suggest LECOM...from what I hear they really take a lot at the whole applicant versus other schools. I think NSU might be the same, but don't quote me on that one. Good Luck.🙂

Thank you for that. LECOM is on my "maybe once I get my newer, better scores" list because they have posted that successful applicants typically have 24 or higher. But I guess that doesn't necessarily mean I'll definitely be unsuccessful with less than that.

And for NSU, I have on my spreadsheet that they require 23, at least that's what it says on the CIB. So they're definitely off the list for now. It also says a minimum of 3.0 for a secondary, but doesn't say if that's cum or sci. I have so many emails/phone calls to send/make.

Would it be too late to submit the primary application this week? There's only one or two DO schools I'm considering (not that it makes a difference how many you apply to), which, from what I've read, don't start interviews until later in the cycle anyway. Anyone have experience applying this late?

I was wondering if I would be considered late based on the following stats:

nonscience gpa= 3.5 science gpa= 3.3 I have my B.S. and will graduate with my M.S. in biology in Dec 09. I have OK volunteering activity and MD shadowing. However I do not have DO shadowing yet, as I plan on doing it immediately.....

However I am taking my MCAT in January and have no scores right now. My question is when should I submit my DO application? I am still working on my personal essays and filling out the DO online app. Please let me know what to do, I have no idea....

I would save your money and apply early next year. Without an MCAT score your primary will essentially be on hold (you can submit a primary without an MCAT score but it doesn't go out to schools until it's received) and since you're taking it in January it'll be past most schools' deadlines. Have your MCAT score, letters of recommendation, and your personal statement ready by June so you can submit early next cycle.

I don't think you're late! I just finished my Tucom secondary a week or so ago and just got an interview.

I'd say have your friends read your essays, revise until you're comfortable with them, and then try to submit within the next week or so.
