School hasn't been good to me lately (or perhaps the latter 🙂) but right now I'm enrolled in community college with 38 credits and a dismal 3.2 GPA 🙁 I've taken 4 science courses and 2 math courses and received the following:

Bio 101: B
Bio 102: A
General Chem 1: B
General Chem 2: B
Precalc 1: A
Statistics: B

I have not received any Cs. What I'm worried about is, because these grades are coming from community college, the pharm schools are going to really frown upon what's been done so far. Honestly, I wanted to go right to pharm school after finishing my associates here..

I'm looking for some guidance/advice on what to do at this point (besides "you need to get all As from here on out" 🙂) Am I at the point where I need to finish a Bachelor's at a university to even have a chance?

EDIT: Also wanted to add that I have 3 W's. Two in public speaking, and one in Physics 🙁 🙁

No, you're not screwed. Making A's from here on out won't hurt😉, but you still have some wiggle room there as well (though not much). I'd say with a 3.2 look at schools that take a lot of students without the 4-yr degree. Also look into your ECs and possibilities for experience. These will help make up for a less than stellar GPA. Also make sure you understand the material you were tested on in Bio and Chem classes, you'll need it to get a decent PCAT.(definition of decent depends on where you apply)

I have no ECs right now.. except for the fact that I've worked a full time job in retail sales for the past five years. Letters of recommendation is going to be a problem for me as well; alot of my professors only last a year here at community college and I never see them again.

Let me sum things up a little bit, here on studentdoctor the responses to your question will receive a few different basic answers.......this question is a favorite, I asked it when I was applying I think.

Responses.....

1. You still have a chance! "I think you could say you have a 1.0 GPA and smoke crack while doing homework and put yourself through school by selling crack and someone would still tell you this."
2. Volunteer and get involved in some ECs*
3. Get a job at a pharmacy as a clerk or tech.
4. Start going for a Bachelors degree to look more competitive.*
5. Study harder and get As.*
6. Grades aren't everything! If you write great essays and get great LORs and have a great interview then low GPA won't hurt.
7. Make up for your low GPA by doing awesome on the PCAT.
8. Apply early!!!!**
9. You should sit down and rethink your priorities so you can fix your grades.*
10.Community college credits will not be looked upon as well as 4 year credits!
11. Community college credits are just as good as 4 year credits!

I think this takes care of most of the responses...might be a few I forgot. The * ones are the good ones in my opinion. Good luck with your goals man!

Precalc and Stats are not a pharm prereq. right? Calculus is... no?

That does cover all the bases......

I guess the only thing I can say that isn't on this list is:

YOU ARE SO F---ING SCREWED! PRACTICE THIS LINE: "WOULD YOU LIKE FRIES WITH THAT?" YOU'LL NEED IT, A LOT.

Just kidding.......😀

Stats and Calc is a prereq i believe....

Also, to the OP, your grades arent bad and it doesnt really matter too much where you got the grade from, but thats just my opinion.

My grades are subpar at community college because I work a fulltime job and survive on 5-6 hours of sleep every night. All of the Bs I've gotten have been high Bs, but there is no B+ here at community college. I have no other choice though, I cannot quit my job because I have NO HELP from my parents in regards to paying for school. NONE. They won't even co-sign a student loan for me. Oh yeah, I have bad credit too (screwed up when I was younger). So I have to rely on winning the lottery to pay the tuition for Pharmacy school when I make it. Now that I've painted you a really bad picture as to where I stand in life, I'm going to go eat my some donuts for breakfast now 🙂

Get your credit fixed NOW! That will help out tremendously later on.

I have seen stats as a pre req for some but not all schools.

Is it possible your workplace offers tuition reimbursement. I know mine does. $800/yr for part-timers and the max allowable $5000+ (don't remember exact number) for full-timers. I work for a utility but I know there are several employers that have similar benefits.

My company offers no tuition reimbursment.

1) Fix your credit...now.
a) Get 2-3 credit cards. Intrest rates on them wont matter because you wont be carrying a balance, right? Make sure they dont have annual fees.
b) Use them for ONLY gasoline. Rotate them is necessary.
c) Pay them off monthly and on time.
d) Ask for a credit limit increase. One of the major parts of your credit score is balance to credit ratio. The higher your limit, the better you are. Just dont use it!
e) If youre going to close an account close the newer ones. Length of credit history is also important.

2) Do not settle for Bs. Youre paying for these classes...you need to get As in the "easier" prereqs. + and - dont count, so dont worry about it. Id rather work a bit harder and get an A then attempt such a grade in a class like Organic Chem

3) Get a job in a related field. Take the PTCB Pharmacy tech exam and get a job.

I work FT as well and have managed to pull off several As at a community college. Its possible, just prioritize and organize your time.

You'll be fine....

I'm right there with you. I take three classes per semester (12-15 credit hours), work a full time job, and a second job on the weekends to pay for my wife's nursing tuition and I'm managing a 3.7 with about 4 hours of sleep a night.

If your focus is school, then go to school. Prioritize your life. Don't try to do everything at once. I've developed a routine to handle my situation because I'm willing to sacrifice my time to succeed for my family. Just focus more on your classes, and worry about your credit later...you'll get school loans and you can apply for scholarships too.

And certain schools do require stats and calculus...for those that don't, the stusents are lucky. The school I'll be applying to requires macroeconomics, not statistics.

You might want to contact the admissions offices of schools you are interested in and ask the same question. I got a lot of info before applying by calling and asking questions.
