so i just got my scores for my OB/gyn shelf. i felt after the test i had rocked it was expecting to be a full SD above of the mean. i got my score and im a full SD below the mean, more actually. im not sure how this is possible and im contacting my school to make sure there wasnt a mistake, but should there not be and i did indeed do terrible on it, are my chances f'd for an ob spot? my school doesnt do letter grades or high pass. theres pass, fail, honors. so it will still show as a P. am i worried too much or am i screwed. i see alot of people saying honoring ur intended fields rotation is a big deal. my entire transcript reads P straight across it. no H's no F's. and i was avg on step one, prolly 50% in class rank. is this sounding like i need to pick a new field. o and im a D.O.

I can't comment on the rest of your application, but as far as only passing the rotation, instead of honoring - I don't think your chances are shot. I did not honor my ob/gyn rotation and have still received many interview offers, including to several top-tier programs. I have also received a few rejections that are likely due to only passing, but whatever. I think I made up for the grade in honoring surgery (maybe aim for that, if possible), in doing research, and in really kicking ass in my 4th year electives resulting in killer letters of recommendation. You are by no means out of the running; if ob/gyn is what you reallyreally want to do, don't give up!

...Are you screwed?.

Yeah. By your SDN Name "IdontTakeCall" and your Avatar, you are definitely screwed. A great shelf score wouldn't have saved you from that combination 😀 Seriously--no problem with the shelf score if you otherwise did well and your evaluators felt that you "have potential" as a good future resident.

haha yeah big sox fan and the name was from way back when i was thinking er, and they never take call. i like just about every aspect of ob, call doenst bother me. just would like to get into a residency. i know its on the lower side in terms of difficulty to get into historically, alot of IMGs, and im an american educated white male so im actually a minority. avg ACCEPTED resident at alot of the places im looking at is 205-210 which is low but people said its starting to become competitive. so naturally ima worry till i get into one in like 14 months :/

You will have a chance at a residency spot, but at a community program and not at one of the bigger academic programs. They will expect some honors and in at least the top 25%. As I have noted before in one or two other threads, it will be more competitive this year than ever before. I think that this will be a bad year for IMG's because of the increase in US medical grads applying to the field.
