I’m non trad and no one in my family is a doctor of any sort, so question: am I supposed to reach to med schools?I want to apply to MD/PhD and maybe a few DO/PhD: mix of MSTP, non-mstp, and even unofficial ones(that are listed on AMCAS but not the website).

I know some PhD applicants reach out to PIs like a year in advance to know if they’re accepting students but I have no clue if that’s even a thing I should do.

What even counts as recommended networking? I don’t know.

I went to the NIH grad fair last year and they were all like “don’t show us your resume I won’t remember haha” at the speeches so like I’m not sure if the sentiment applies.

There’s like a few schools near me that I would die to just even interview at but like idk if should make that clear. Don’t want to come off annoying. There’s a couple in which I want to ask about their unofficial MD/PhD programs.

In general, no, you are not expected to network with schools. You are expected to present strong stats, "Why Medicine?", and a clear and strong commitment to service and learning. All the more so for combined degree programs

You absolutely can reach out to schools and if you ask the right questions it could be very good.

Why are you interested in an MD/PhD? As an aside to your core question, there are other ways of becoming an MD/PhD that do lot leave one open to potential issues.

I agree with the above. My school would take it well if you called us but I think we’re weird (no, I won’t dox myself/name the school, sorry)

"Expected" no. But I would still prefer you understand that you'll be around many of these people (current students and residents) for the rest of your career. Admissions representatives are PAID to answer your questions.
Ok I’ll only reach out to the few in which I need more clarification about. Thank you 🙂
