I recently saw an M4's residency app and noticed that they listed their membership for these medical associations on ERAS - don't remember what specific section they listed it under.
Is it frowned upon to not buy membership for these sort of things? The M4 seemed to think that listing it indicated that you are active in the medical community.
So far they have tried to entice me with free Step resources but they have all happened to be ones I already owned. Aside from those I don't really see what benefit I could get from buying into membership at this point.

No it’s not frowned upon. If you are very active (delegate or committee member) in the AMA or a state medical society, it will help. Beyond that, nobody cares whether you are a member or not. Everybody knows it’s just writing a check. Many doctors don’t join because the AMA represents the interests of big corporate medicine at the expense of individual doctors and they send relentless annoying sales pitches for bad life insurance policies.

There's a position at my school's AMA chapter, where you earn referal bonuses for having your classmates sign up. Although joining AMA has benefits, I just wanted to point out some possible bias in the M4's comments.

This is one of the most cringeworthy things I think I've ever seen/heard on ERAS.

Paying ~$50 to join AMA etc is absolutely meaningless. Unless you were an actual AMA officer/delegate/legislator, it doesn't belong on your application. Just being a member impresses absolutely no one and takes up precious space on your app. Super cringeworthy.

Thanks for all of your input and for saving me my ramen money for the time being.
