Does anyone know if it is NOT okay to join the AMA under a medical student membership, as an accepted student who has not yet matriculated to the MD program yet?

If you join as a med student, you get free stuff. You might have to prove you are at the school with an e-mail address but I'm not sure. I never really saw the point of joining AMA for now anyway.

I like free stuff 🙂
Can I create my membership now that I have been accepted to medical school and will be starting my MD later this year?

Actually I think the AMA might verify directly with the school you are matriculating to. I would just wait. Our first year, if we joined, we could get free anatomy flash cards. You might miss out on those if you try now.

There is no need to join that traitorous organization at all. They don't really represent most (any?) practicing physicians.
There is a reason their membership is so low and their PAC is under funded.

Discounts for Board Review Series books. Maybe when you were in medical school the situation for you was different, but I'd like to save money around any corner I possibly can.

Regardless, you won't be able to utilize them until after you start school. Enjoy your time before you start, you'll miss it once it's gone (I know I do).

For the record, I wasn't planning on "pre-studying" if that's what you mean.

That's good. I guess the point is it won't make a difference if you get free BRS books now or once you start. You can always send the admissions dept an email or post the question on the class Facebook page if you really want to.

Well they aren't free, they are discounted. That being said...have a birthday coming up, would like to ask for some 'educational gifts' to save some money later on.

Just wait until you start school. I didn't join AMA, but I joined AMSA because it was free to join. The joining gift was Rohen's anatomy flashcards, which were actually pretty helpful for anatomy. Plus discounts for LWW products (haven't used), discount for Kaplan (haven't used), and a discount for USMLERx (might use).

EDIT: I see they've changed the joining gift for AMSA, and it's now Rubin's pathology flashcards. I have the app for those on my phone (also free) and they're pretty good for pathology recall.

Yeah, I am expecting pathology to be an absolute hellacious nightmare.

I have the hardcover of Robbins and Cotran "Pathologic Basis of Disease" so I hope my school uses that book and I won't have to buy (too many) more pathology books.

LOL Big Robbins is overkill. Great for reference, overkill for studying. Pathoma is my main source for pathology review. Goljan's Rapid Review Pathology is a bit more detailed and fills in the gaps. I have Robbins Review of Pathology but haven't really used it, since class notes/Pathoma/Goljan are enough for me.

AMA gave us a choice between Netter's Anatomy flashcards or a copy of Goljan's Rapid Review Pathology when I first started med school back in August (went for the RRP and it's been a great resource in my path class). Right now they're offering a free copy of First Aid 2014 with membership.

I would encourage people to not join the AMA unless you actually support what they're doing and their role within the medical profession. By opting to get the free stuff - even if you don't care about the membership itself or the AMA as a whole - you lend your support as a member of their roster. This kind of thing actually becomes persuasive when you see things like, "the AMA represents 95% of U.S. doctors!" Do some research and learn about what the AMA does and their positions on basic policy decisions before sending them your money and implicitly supporting them.
