I am in the process of filling out my AMCAS and have noticed that after checking combined degree MD/PHD a new list of boxes appears allowing me to check what field I want my PHD in. Is this new or has it been done before? Is it required? I don't feel comfortable picking a department for my PHD yet and would rather not have to decide that now. Any thoughts?

I think it's just to mark down your research area interests. I was thinking the same thing, and when I asked my professor, she was like "oh, can't you check multiple?" When I looked again, sure enough, you can pick as many as you want. So I don't think choosing a box will be limiting. I think it's just a guideline.

Oh that's great about the multiple boxes. The fact that I wanted to check more than one was precisely the problem. Thanks so much!

Its non-binding and you can select as many as you like. Not sure how selecting one vs. many impacts the Application process - if at all. As mentioned above its mostly to indicate "grossely" your research interests.

Good Luck

Schools will use the areas to match you up with the faculty that are in the checked areas of interest (if you get the interview).
