Hello!
I a not even sure if I am doing this write as this is my first time posting so bear with me.
I have always considered myself a first-generation student. I received a first-generation scholarship from my university all four years, and was a member of my school's first-generation program. None of my parents or siblings ever went to college. However, my mom remarried while I was in college to a man with a bachelor's degree. I never lived at the house when my step-dad lived there and he is not legally my guardian or anything like that.
I was under the impression that we had to list our step-parents on our application, which I did, but I also marked that he did not live in the household while I was a child.
The issue is I just realized AMCAS did not mark me as a first-generation student. I had marked that I was because I was under the impression that first-generation meant biological parents and/or would only count my step-dad if he had lived with me while I was growing up. So am I not a first generation student?
I mentioned being first-generation in one of my activities descriptions and I have been mentioned it in my diversity essay for many of my secondaries. Is this considered misrepresenting myself? Should I contact schools and clarify? I am really upset because I didn't mean to do this. I honestly didn't even think I would need to check if they had changed my status and I didn't even know how to anyway. I faced quite a few obstacles being a first-generation student and I am still facing them throughout this application process.
If anyone could give me any insight or has any idea the next steps I should take, if any, it would be greatly appreciated.
