I keep getting conflicting advice regarding the AMCAS extra-curriculars section... some say that you should only include a brief discussion of what you did, whereas others say that you should go into greater detail and perhaps discuss what that activity meant to you or your desire to go into medicine. On my first try, I erred on the side of being more brief, and I can't help but wonder if it I didn't make the most of my space or if I did that part just right. What are your opinions on this?

I use it if you need it. For volunteering in the ED, you could say:

I worked Friday mornings for two years.

I worked Friday mornings for two years. I mainly transported patients and ran cultures, but I was able to assist in lots of procedures.

I worked Friday mornings for two years. I mainly transported patients and ran cultures, but I was able to assist in lots of procedures. Then there was this one time where Harry was talking to Sally about that one time...

So use the space - you're given a bunch - to describe the pertinent facts of what you did, and don't skimp on things that make you sound good. But don't use it just to use it, or fill it with garbage.
