Hey everyone. I go to the University of Western Ontario and just finished my second year of undergrad there.

In Ontario, OMSAS calls anything above 90 a 4.0 from my school. However, I've heard many different things about AMSAS. Some people say 80 = 4.0, others say 85 = 4.0, and some even say 93 = 4.0

I contaced AMSAS on the phone this morning and to be honest, they were useless. They said, "When you input the marks we will tell you your GPA online" I'm not sure if I want to apply this year but I want to know my AMSAS GPA.

Does anyone know how to calculate the AMSAS GPA if I know my OMSAS one for Ontario?

1. It is AMCAS not AMSAS
2. You can find all the info you need to translate and calculate your grade accoring to AMCAS standards online with the other supporting materials.

if your transcript says you got an A, then AMCAS will give you an A. Your transcript probably doesn't have percentages on it, so it doesn't really matter what your school's cut-off was for that grade.

Hey again everyone.

I have an official transcript in my hands right now. On the transcript my marks are given in numberic percents. HOWEVER, on the back there is a 'conversion chart' that converts my %'s into letter grades.

It says and I quote:

'A+ 90-100% one could scarcely expect better from a student
'A 80-89% superior work which is clearly above average
etc....'

According to this % to letter conversion I have four A+ and one A (took 5 full courses this year)

***BUT I am worried about something***

http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/conversionguide2006.pdf

Look at the very bottom of the chart. It says Numeric-Canadian. I'm confused, because one of my marks was 86, which classifies it as an A-
However, my University says it is an A.

Can anyone tell me what my AMCAS GPA is? This is really getting annoying....

Well why don't you just let AMCAS decide...
Submit your AMCAS...wait for them to correct your grades and voila.
You have your AMCAS gpa ready to apply with.

Hello Brett.

The reason I don't do this, is I do not have all the prerequisites completed yet. Nor do I want to pay anything to AMCAS to calculate my GPA for me.

If anyone could help me out with this, that would be great.!

BrettBatchelor said:
Well if you don't have your pre-reqs done and aren't getting ready to apply it is pretty pointless what your AMCAS GPA is.

I have every prereq done except for Organic Chemistry.

I just wanted to know what my AMCAS GPA is. Can anyone please help me out?

Ha Ha! This statement is just funny, and I was also wondering what this "scarcity" is that you can expect of students with 100%

Anyways, why not ask AMCAS, and not us. We don't know. But I bet they do. Just give them a call or shoot them an email.

And, to reiterate what everyone said before, why do you want to know so badly? It would be like me calling AMCAS and saying I want to know my MCAT scores today, just b/c I don't want to wait till Thurs...

I doubt AMCAS will tell you anything since they simply don't know. At the end, it is the decision of the person verifying your transcript. They decide whether your percentages follow the AMCAS conversion or the conversion given on your transcript.

if an 86 is an A at your school, and an A- at AMCAS, then tough ****, get over it (not trying to be too mean, but seriously, relax)

and besides, are you really surprised that you're getting a reduction in one of your grades??
I would expect more
you have A+'s at your school, I've never seen a college that I'm aware of use A+'s down here, all of them that I'm aware of have a A as the highest grade

in other words, your grades of "4 A+'s and an A" would be equal to "4 A's and an A-" down here since there is no such thing as an A+ in college here (at least that I'm aware of)

so what you're seeing as an A for your school would be an A- for the rest of us down here, why should you get an A for AMCAS when the rest of us would get an A- on our AMCAS for the same course performance (2nd level down from the highest grade one could get)

so this just putting on equal playing field with the rest of us, so don't complain

If these percentages are based on the amount of points you get (I.E 90/100 would be 90%) you are lucky.

A 100-93
A- 93-90
B+ 89-87
B 86-83
ETC.

I was not aware you did not have A+ in the US.

So in the US is 90%+ an A? Is 80%+ an A-?

If so my AMCAS GPA won't be as high as I hoped it would 🙁

amcas has a section for converting to canadian grades to gpa. just enter your percentage and amcas will figure it out. i did this last year and i had ontario grades as well

and it doesnt matter whether its an A or A-, schools look at the gpa number. just let amcas do it

Hi wends.

Which Canadian school did you go to?
Do you remember what an 80%, 85% and 90% were?

*** New question ***

If I were to sign up for AMCAS just to get my GPA would it cost me anything?

I don't want to apply until next year, but I want to know what my AMCAS GPA is. Would I be able to do that without spending anything?

NO. Hence forth why you need to CHILL OUT. What does it matter if you have an AMCAS GPA of 3.47 or 3.67 right now. You aren't applying for atleast a year and there is NO point to know this info now. Please drop the topic.

No offence man, but if you don't want to answer the question then don't read the topic?

Can anyone answer my question for me? Can I sign up for AMCAS and find out my GPA even though I don't want to apply anywhere this year? Thank you.

Now this is becoming embarasing!

If you are not applying this year.. then why are you so concerned with this?

If you have an A or A+ at a Canadian University you have 4.0 of the AAMCAS application. NOW stop asking all these questions. GO TO EXCEL PUT IN YOUR MARKS AND CALCULATE ONE BY ONE. ONE FULL COURSE AT UofT EQUALS 6 Credits. half course equals 3 credits.

BTW, no one on this site has final word on what you GPA is and it doesn't matter what anyone on here sais. When you are ready you will apply and find out.

Now take my advice, put more energy into studying for the MCAT and get off this topic.

Hello docbill.

I'm gonna be honest with you. The reason I'm worried about it is I need to know what I should shoot for. I can get an 80 much easier than a 90, and if both are 4.0 then I will work part-time during the school year.
Can you please answer my question? Thank you.

MY ADVICE. I am not an expert thou.

Don't work part time, but do summer research work in a lab. (Ask other students about this... or contact your department and ask them how this is done).

Get a 4.0 and apply to Canadian and US medical Schools. Try your best at everything.

There is a chinese saying. Aim for the stars and if you get to the moon... its pretty darn good.. something like that.

Now please stop asking for exact answers from people on the net. Concentrate on your upcoming MCAT and enjoy your summer.

You will not get accepted untill you finish your degree (or in the last year). That is 4 years. So if I recall you have 2 more years. Enjoy life till then.

look at the conversion table....

87 above is like 4.0 from what i remember....

80-87 is 3.7? i forget, but put in your marks and figure it out.

but this gpa is different from omsas conversions.....so just aim for as high as you can....

Ok guys. Last question and I'll drop this thread.

Can I sign up for AMCAS, input my marks, get my GPA and not pay anything?
I'm not applying until next year, but I want to know my AMCAS GPA for certain.

they'll only give you your gpa after you submitted everything

why dont you just do it on your own? you want to be a doctor, im sure calculating a gpa is not beyond your capabilities, i calculated mine beforehand and it was the same. the conversion tables are all there...they're not doing anything different than you would do.

Hello wends. Perhaps you could help me.

http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/conversionguide2006.pdf

I assume I use the last table (Canadian - Numeric)

Which set of numbers do I use? One column says 100-87 is 4.0, while another says 100-84 is a 4.0? I don't understand why there is 3 rows of white boxes with numbers in them to caluclate your GPA?

I had 2 courses (summer session) from UWO on my transcript, both 84% and AMCAS somehow converted that to 3.00. Never bothered to dispute it, but it did make their conversion methods seem blackbox-ish.

That has to be the most ******ed thing I've ever heard.
How the hell can 84% be a 3.0 ..... For OMSAS that would be a 3.7 I believe.

Did you have any other courses from UWO on your transcript? Do you know which of the three rows I should use for my GPA calculations on the website I posted above?

Anyone who can help would be apreciated.

Yeah, it was weird because I had grades from 2 other Ontario schools with conversions that seemed reasonable. No other courses from UWO at the time, and they were both 84% grades, full credit done during the summer.

You can always appeal their conversion if it doesn't seem right, but I didn't bother, so can't tell you more than their conversion is a bit more arbitrary than OMSAS.

Perhaps the low conversion was due to you taking summer courses at UWO and courses during the year somewhere else? I don't know what to tell you...

How would you go about appealing that conversion, and on what grounds would you appeal it on?

I had 2 summer courses from UofT that converted fine. Can't help you with the appeals process because I didn't use it, but they talk about it in the AMCAS materials.
