So after much toiling with my PS for amcas, i headed on over to the AACOMAS website hoping i could just use my allopathic essay for my osteopathic one. Not the case (of course....that would be too easy, and nothing about this process or the life of a phyisician is easy, as i've come to discover). I'm sure many people are in the position of applying to both types of schools. So my questions are a) how did you go about writing the osteopathic one after writing the amcas one? b) Did you take parts from one and use it for the other? Or did you start from scratch? c) I take it one has to address why he wants to go to osteopathic over the other, correct? d) Does anyone else feel that a 3000 character limit is rather short? Im very interested in knowing what people think.

Thanks

honestly, I took my AMCAS app and tried to take sections from it about why I wanted to become a doctor and then incorporate it into my AACOMAS application.. But honestly, not much was the same between the two PS. I had a completely different intro and body. What worked with writing the AACOMAS PS was just recounting my experience shadowing a DO physician and then describing why I wanted to be a DO physician.

I would suggest if you're stuck that you use a quote to start off the essay and then try to do some research into the osteopathic medical field.

Yeah the 3000 characters was apleasant surprise because I believe in keeping it simple and short.

yes to all your questions...

The skeleton of the essay is the same. I mean, you want to be a physician for the same reason as AMCAS, your life experiences are the same as AMCAS, etc. Just take out / condense stuff that you feel isn't too significant and do add why you chose osteopathy.

I tried compressing my AMCAS paragraphs. I came back to it the next day and realized it REALLY didn't work.

So, I took my bf's advice. I first listed (in bullets) the main idea of each paragragh in the AMCAS PS. Then, my goal was to reduce the bullets to 6 total. To do this I did some combining (of main ideas) and rearranging.

Once I had my 6 bullets, I wrote from there... it went relatively painlessly after I pared down my points since I was using pretty much the same language as the AMCAS PS.

AMCAS took me 6 weeks and numerous reviews and rewrites.
ACOMAS took me one day.

It was basically a re-write, but it was easier to collapse it first and then build back up again.

Hope this helps!

Oh yes, one of those bullets included speaking about "Why DO"
