While filling out total hours for a particular job, I was able to put 1200 in the total hours section. But reading over the FAQ on this site had a question regarding how to report more than 999 hours, leading to this help page:
https://www.aamc.org/students/applying/amcas/faqs/336138/morethan1000hours.html

Does this mean when I submit my app, my 1200 will be cut off to 120 if I do not use the repeated trick they suggest? Or does the fact that I am physically able to put 4 digits and have it save on the application serve as indication that they changed it this year?

Sorry if it seems like a nit picky question.

I just put down 999. Since most of my activities have been literally thousands and thousands of hours, I assume the adcomms are smart enough to realize that I did more than 1000+ hours. There is also something called the point of diminishing returns. I'm sure whether it is 999 versus 1200, it would have reached that point as far as the adcomms are concerned, for their purposes at least.

Honestly the number of hours is not as important as the content of your experience. It is not like they put the numbers into some equation that spits out a decision. It is meant to give a general idea of your time commitment.

What he said. Just list it as 999 and usually they will be smart enough to understand. Either that or in the description you can clarify.

Follow the instructions in the link. Don't just put 999 and leave it at that. It becomes very confusing for some adcoms who expect a full time job to be 2000+ hrs/yr.

This year one is able to insert up to 99,999 hours, despite what AMCAS' FAQ says. If you call or email them to see what's what, maybe you could come back and let us know.

I just looked at what I did last year. Most of the ones that I tagged as repeated are still maxed out as 999 for the repeated experiences. For those that had over 4000 hours, or it was too hard to divide out and if I had characters, the rough total was in the descriptions except for a few.

Others, they have to be smart enough to realize if I did something for 20+ years that the odds are good the hours are over 999 and very likely over 4000 hours.

I have this same question as well. I feel like they may have changed the AMCAS to allow or 1000+ hr entries but not updated this FAQ link yet?

For what it's worth, when I use the "print application" feature and generate a PDF, the application does not cut off the fourth digit.

I think that's worth a lot as that is what the committee will physically see. We need to spread the word on this!

Then I'm fairly confident they changed it this year. Thank you.
