Hey guys,

Not sure if there is already a thread on this topic but, I was wondering if there are any American schools that don't require prerequisites or physics...

I'm currently a 4th year BFA student in Canada. I have about a half a year left on my degree, and applying for medicals this coming fall. I'm a very non-traditional applicant, but have taken 2 semesters of Bio. Did Chem last semester but was such a mess, dropped it before grades went on my transcript. Think I'll take it again in summer school.

Now There are a few Canadians schools that don't require prerequisites for application, and only look at MCAT. In fact McMaster University will only consider VR on the MCAT and not all other sections. I'm taking the MCAT end of August...

So just wondering if I'll be eligible for any American schools this fall as well?

Any suggestions would be fantastic!

Realistically, none. Schools without set pre-reqs (Stanford, USC Keck, Vandy come to mind), really aren't saying you don't need the common classes (Bio, orgo, gen chem, phys, etc etc); they're really looking for more rather than less.

With you being short on pre reqs, foreign, and with no state residency status, I don't see any US MD schools as viable options.

hmmm okay. Maybe I should double major in a science degree? Since I'm still in my undergrad, so I can get all the prereqs? I'm going to be like 30 by the time I apply if I go that route... I just feel so old compared to all the people on this forum who are like 18 and applying to med (I'm exaggerating of course). So My biggest advantage I guess is playing on my life experiences (spent 4 years travelling the world dancing with companies, and working with kids with HIV in Thailand) and also my high GPA lol... I would like to go to the US because I really like it there...

You want to take sufficient UG coursework such that you will be able to succeed in medical school once you get there. The 'generic prerequisites' list is a pretty good indicator of what those classes should include. Will there be some schools that make exceptions? Sure -- but going in short on basic sciences is not the best way to maximize your odds of either acceptance or success.

Thanks DokterMom. So would you suggest that I minor or second major in a biomedical or health science degree on top of my Bachelors of Fine Arts? Because I feel like in order to "take sufficient UG coursework" will be another couple of years anyways, and I'm nearing the end of my bachelors degree... Because my program was specialized, there was little room for electives. So I feel like maybe I should just minor or double major, maybe it'll make my application a bit more interesting... Dance and Science lol.

Wut? Damn I would have been a God in Canada. Also I dont think Hofstra requires any specific pre-reqs. That doesnt necessarily mean they will let you in without them though.

Medical schools don't care about your major so I would say do whatever is easiest for you! If you think a science major or minor would be beneficial to you as a plan B, if medical school doesn't pan out, then that might be one reason to do it. Or if it's somehow financially advantageous. But really, medical schools only care that you took the prereqs and did well. (Adding in some upper level science courses can't hurt but ultimately, a double major or minor isn't going to make you stand out.)

The MSAR indicates many required courses for HMS.
Interesting... Thanks for checking. I was under the impression that they were competency-based now. Either they changed that this year or I am mistaken. In any event, they have pretty loose requirements. For example, they allow you to get lab experience outside the classroom. And one year of biology can be ANY biology courses, etc.
