Do we need to memorize the structures of the 20 amino acids? Has anyone whos taken the DAT been asked to name a particular amino acid and whether or not it is polar, non polar, acidic or basic based on its structure?

Being biochem major, I wish there were questions like that! 😀 but unfortunately (!) I didnt get question of that nature at all, dont worry about it

Hey there...I just took the DAT on 8/10/06 and I didn't have any questions on specific amino acid names. But...I am sure that if they showed a structure of one, they would ask if it is polar/nonpolar/acidic/basic. I did get a question in the Organic section that showed the structure of glutamic acid and asked what the acid would look like at pH of 1. All the side groups would be protonated at this pH. One difficult question was in the Organic section that showed an intermediate in the TCA cycle and you had to chose the correct IUPAC name...that was hard! Hope that helps you....I wish you nothing but luck!!!
