I'm just wondering how bad the AMSA health insurance is. I'm considering a postbac program that would not allow me to insurance through the school. I don't think any health insurance company would sell me an individual plan because of pre-existing conditions (including bad allergies/asthma).

It's interesting that you frame your uncertainty about the AMSA insurance plan by wanting to know "how bad" it is.

I wish I knew more about the plan, myself. A few weeks ago I read a disturbing article in the L.A. Times about how some "trade groups" offer group-rate health insurance plans that later reveal themselves as scams. (I hope this link works and doesn't make you register an account; it worked for me a few minutes ago: http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-insure5jul05,1,1554467.story?coll=la-headlines-business) Of course, AMSA seems much more well known than the nonprofit association highlighted in this article. But still, it makes me wonder whether people have had trouble getting their medical expenses covered through the AMSA plan.

Sierra89,
One of the insurance companies mentioned in the Los Angeles Times article runs the AMSA health insurance. Thanks for the link.

Thanks for pointing that out. After examining the site, I do see that studentresources.com is a division of Mega insurance company. I hope, at this stage in my life, I don't get cancer like the guy in the LA Times article; however, I think I'm going to have to know more about the company to make a decision on whether this would provide sufficient basic care.

To all current medical students: Does anyone have a health insurance plan through AMSA? If so, are you satisfied with what the insurance covers (considering that you may save $1000/year in premiums)? Thanks for posting!
