I am trying to understand the motivation for people to use actual pictures of themselves for their avatar. Is it honesty? Vanity?

I mean, the word itself is derived from a Hindu word describing the incarnation of a god on Earth. Thus, (in a strict etymological sense) it shouldn't be oneself, but rather something representative of oneself, no?

like a scantily clad cartoon character?

Well, it embodies my view of life.

What's the story with your Avatar. Is it you? And why?

I think that's the actor from 6 Feet Under. Wait, is Fugazism the actor from 6 Feet Under?!?

That's Chris O'Donnell playing the vet on Grey's Anantomy-can't seem to remember his character's name...

So it looks like it's your picture, but actually it's a famous guy. That's even trickier.

No way. It's totally Peter Krause from Six Feet Under.

dr. finn dandridge. i'm a dork, i know.

i do have a cartoon avatar but people complained when i changed it. i don't have a cat or a dog, so i put up a mugshot of myself.

but this still does not answer our original question of why people put themselves on their avatar. Anyone?

Seriouisly.

I mean, don't you worry that adcoms will recognize you from that little picture you give them on interview day?

How do you mean 'people complained'? They loved looking at your mug so much that they asked you to put it back up?

Hahaha....no? And if they do I don't have anything to hide. I put up a picture of myself just like I did on facebook, myspace, etc...even though its different I still like seeing people's faces that I talk to on a regular basis. This post is the most thought I've put into my avatar honestly

But it's not actually you. It's a picture... representing... you.

It's not for reasons of vanity that I put my amazing visage in my avatar, but out of compassion for my fellow man. For to deny man the right to look upon my amazing face is an act of cruelty that can only cause pain... this is not the act of a future physician. So, in a tremendous act of personal sacrifice, I thrust my picture upon the web and let humanity bask in my glory.

So you posted your face because such action is habitual, having done it on all those other websites?

I seem to remember, though, that your Avatar wasn't always yourself.

Fortunately, you covered up the scariest part.

Yeah right. 🙄

people wanted it back up. i changed it initially because i was sick of getting pms that pertained to how i looked rather than my stats. after awhile though, i didn't care. it is still a compliment, so it's up again.

i do find your avatar entertaining.

Keep it, you look pretty damn hot 😍

thanks.

I second that. 😍

thanks.

You're right, perhaps some day... the people of this world will be prepared to see me without pants.
aren't you going DO, though? oh yeah, that's right, you get to wear shorts in omm. not like europe, where you have to wear a speedo or bikini briefs. :scared:

My avatar is a picture of myself. I decided to put it there because I was always trying to picture what everyone looked like and I thought maybe other people were doing the same. I think it would be nice if everyone put their picture up so we could put a face to the comments everyone was posting. I agree with LisaMD. This is the most thought I have put into my avatar. LOL! BTW Lisa, love the new pic!😀

This thread is pointless.

I think it's better if we all don't know what we look like because that could color our interaction or opinions. For instance, your slighly salacious photo makes me less willing to contradict you.

Is that feeling offset by the fact that her name is "Doctormom"? Or does that just make it even hotter?

I think I will make my avatar a picture of LisaMD.

Truth be told, the name doesn't bother, just the fact that she's got four children. Which fact makes the pic all the more incomprehensible.

That's a mom I'd like to... respect.

Agreed.

To which part do you agree? You do use your own photo for your avatar, so it can't be the first sentence...

He's using LisaMD's picture, not his own. And that's creepy.

Darksmurf, I still can't find that pic anywhere...

I feel this adequately represents myself.....

I think I've found a grand total of 3 pictures of myself that I actually like over the past 30 years, so I'll go with Dr. Cox, since he's a doctor from Pittsburgh, too. 😉
