Some of the schools I've looked at require a year of English. I've only had one semester of English, but my advisors have told me not to worry about it. However, right now I have about 19 units of classes between the next two semesters, so I figured I could add an extra English class on top of that. But a lot of my friends will be taking a class called Inorganic Chemistry and I want to take it with them. My #1 choice is U.C. Davis, a school that says it wants a year of English prior to matriculation. Should I go through with my current plans and take the English class, or have fun in Inorganic Chemistry?

Thanks 🙂

About the English classes: UCLA, another school I'm applying to, requires a year of English as well, however they require that one of those semesters be a composition class. I couldn't really find a composition class and instead signed up for an upper division grammar class, is this a big deal?

to begin, Inorganic Chem is not necessarily a "fun" class, it is an upper division chem class and can require a decent amount. Take whatever you want, but it's your risk if you don't take another semester of english prior to the application cycle to schools that require it.

To me it's a fun class as described.

Look at it this way...if you and another student are exactly alike (as far as how the adcom ranks you), but that student has a year of english and you don't...I would imagine the lack of english would give them a reason to choose the other person. Even if it's only recommended, I think you should do it to get as much leverage as you can possibly get for yourself

Take all 19 units next semester and graduate early. Also, taking the English class may make it easier to handle the load. I really don't know how heavy 19 semester units are, since I've been on the quarter system for the last 4 years...

Take the English class!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My stupid counselor fed me the same crap about "don't worry about it" with the whole 2-semesters-of-English thing, and as a result of her utter stupidity, I now have to take summer school the summer before I start med school. I was officially registered for an English class, and she actually told me I didn't have to take it. Don't listen to your counselor; he/she doesn't know what he/she is talking about, and on top of that, when you find out they made a mistake that will take away your med school acceptances, your undergrad institution will do NOTHING to rectify the situation.

Sorry if I sound bitter, but I'm just trying to protect you from your bonehead counselors just as I wish someone had protected me.

Take the English class and any other prerequisites for any school you are interested in!!!! They are not always as flexible as people think they are.

Quite heavy. I can't take both Pchems in the same semester anyways, not to mention various other conflicts with my double major.

Ok, you and luvme convinced me. By chance did it matter what English class? I took upper division course called "Introduction to grammar" since I figured that's the only English class where I might learn something useful.
