For schools that only have one introductory bio class, anatomy and it's lab counts as a general biology course?

Because of my AP exam, I got AP Credit for intro to bio and some random organismal course plus both of the labs. I had just assumed that those would count for my 8 biology credits. When filling out the GWU secondary, however, I noticed that it said to list all the courses your undergraduate institution recommends for medical school admissions. When I crossed checked with my school, it said that to fulfill 1 academic year of biology, take intro to bio and either human anatomy or comparative anatomy.

So I guess, while my school obviously says to do it this way, is this common at other schools?

My school requires Intro Bio with lab and Genetics with lab. I've never heard of anatomy being a Pre-Med class before.

Good question. I almost put down more advanced courses for GWU's secondary too. If courses aren't in the bio dept at my school but are recorded as bio for AMCAS, do they satisfy requirements?

Maybe it's due to the lack of biology courses that actually require a lab at my school. We have to take intro bio, and from there we have three "core" classes (molecular & genetics, cell & developmental, and ecology & population) none of which have labs. Three or four of the upper level courses have labs, but that's about it. I never realized this was strange until coming to SDN.

I think you'd be alright...have to contact a school to find out. They seem to leave the requirements puporsefully vague though. I rarely see "General Biology 1 and 2"

It is usually 8 Credits of Biology, with 2 credits being lab. Or something like that.....I am going to contact the medical school here soon and find out for sure...it can mean me not having to take a certain course which would be nice. I'll tell you what they say...if I remember that is.

Yeah, I figured I'd be okay. I come from a school with a large number of applicants each year and I've never heard of anyone having problems with our courses not matching up. I've just never realized how much curriculums vary from school to school until now.

Anatomy may not count towards the bio prerequisite! I took 2 A&P classes and they did not count for many of the IL schools. When I called they told me it had to be "General" biology...they said my A&P classes and my micro did not count.

You will need to check with the schools to see what they are willing to accept.

KCT, do you remember if U. of Illinois wanted general psych classes or do you think psychology of asian americans will fill that requirement as well.

I met with someone from admissions last week and what he said was you can take any 3 classes in psych, sociology, anthro to fulfill the prerequisites. He also said you do not have to take 2 in series...this is different from what the website may say (2 psych in series and 1 soc) but that is what he said. I would give them a call to be sure, but this is what he told me.
