Hey everyone! Got a few DPT questions...mainly just to get opinions...I was getting a bit worried about getting accepted anywhere. Was denied by GVSU (I kind of expected that one..), CMU and OU. I was put on the alternates list for Northwestern and got the "competitive" email from UM -Flint and will be hearing from them in February. I recently got accepted into Andrews and I am pretty excited that I got accepted somewhere at least. However, the cost is outrageous...lol (looks like $90,000 total WITH my GRE discount...). I know a lot of the basics but I am just curious if anyone can add any advice or info about Andrews as a program as well as tips for paying for such a program since it is discouraged to work during PT school...

Another question I have is that I just sent out my confirmation deposit for Andrews. Does this mean that I am officially tied to Andrews now or could I opt out if UM - Flint accepts me? Andrews only gave me two weeks to put down the deposit to secure my seat and I didn't want to risk giving up my only offered seat for a mere possibility of getting into UM - Flint..However, I'd much rather go to UM - Flint for costs and location of being closer to family and friends...

My next question is mainly to hear what you guys have heard.. I went to MSU and was part of the PPTA. We had a few PT speakers who stated that PT is in such a need in Michigan that some places are offering jobs that pay for your student loans in addition to your salary and benefits. Has anyone heard similar stories or details like this? I know a starting licensed PTs make around $65,000 on average (according to OU) but making that with health benefits AND getting your loans paid seems way too good to be true...haha

Finally, this is a small question...but I remember UM - Flint saying that they give laptops/iPads to their students...does anyone know if Andrews does this as well? (its a nice little perk! haha)

Thanks everyone!

It is definitely not discouraged to work during PT school. I work at a hospital in southeastern Michigan as a rehab tech and the other techs who are in PT school work 3 or 4 days a month. Where I work they have a program where they give you a certain amount of money, like a bonus, to help pay off your loans. It all depends on where you work. My cousin just graduated from Flint's DPT program and he never said anything about laptops or iPads. So I don't know about that.

Hmm...definitely good to know about the tech positions!

Remember if you wok at hospitals you'll get a singing bonus. Some places offer loan repayment programs and raises based off yearly reviews. Don't worry you'll be okay no matter where you go o PT school.

Yeah, I'll definitely be looking into whatever gives me the best offer in terms of loan repayment...

You got wait listed by NW but denied by GVSU and OU? Ridiculous.
Haha, makes tons of sense doesn't it?? I'll admit, my gpa was around a 3.4 overall and it isn't the greatest in terms of applying for graduate schools but it at least above requirements. What I have going for me are my experiences with research as well as an internship at an orthopedic hospital. That also gave me great LoR. But unfortunately, GVSU seems to live up to its reputation it sounds like with accepting students with a near perfect gpa or a GVSU background...heck, I've read some posts that students with a 4.0 gpa and experience cant even get in to GVSU...its just a tough school for some reason...As for OU, they must have gotten a pretty competitive bunch this cycle or something.. But it still doesn't make sense on how I could make the wait list for one of the best PT schools in the nation and not even be considered from others...lol
