Anemia and osteolytic bone

I wonder how anemia diseases, for example thalassemia, cause osteolytic lesion. I'm a first year clinical medical student and studying in radiology section. I got an x-ray film of thalassemia patient which show the extramedullary hematopoiesis ( dense lesion ), but I don't understand why thalassemia cause the osteolytic lesion too which shown the course trabecular appearace.

Hypertrophic and hyperplastic marrow response leads to expansion of the medulla, thinning of the cortex, destruction of trabeculae, and overall osteopenia with focal areas of lucency due to erosion of the cortex. The marrow ends up proliferating in the subperiosteal space.

I believe these findings are still not fully understood.
