Anesth rotatio

Has anyone done a 2-week anesth rotation as a "audition rotation" during their 4th year (at a non-home site)? If so, where? And was it a good rotation? Good learning experience?

Especially if someone knows of a good 2 week Pain or Critical Care rotation.

From my experience, 2 week rotations were a waste of time. The usual response I got from residents when I told them I was going to be spending 2 weeks at their program was "oh, that sucks...."

It's tough to get to know everyone well during a month rotation let alone 2 weeks. On the other hand, if the program ends up being a bust and not what you expected, it's nice you didn't waste a whole month there.

I did one at Irvine off-schedule. The PD is a cool younger guy who was willing to accomodate me. It was hectic though and you can tell the student coordinator was not happy with me and mistakes were made on my schedule which the sc was responsible for (at an away you don't want anyone not happy with you even if it's not your fault). I don't know if the away helped me, but it did give me an automatic interview. They did have a test at the end of the rotation (so you get 2 weeks to study for it versus people who spend a month there), but it's still an opportunity to shine. Overall, it helped me decide how much i liked the program and where to rank it on my list. When you interview, you will see everyone sells the hell out of their programs and the interview day is not an accurate picture of the day to day operations. I also felt more comfortable at my interview becausee I had seen the day to day operations.

Rotating through pain would be useless and probably critical care tool as many of the docs on the admission committee do not go work in these dept. There are exceptions of course so check.
