Anesthesia procedure in tonsillectomy?

Sorry to be butting into an area where I have relatively little experience.

I was just wondering (residents/attendings please) what the protocol is for a "standard" tonsillectomy? I.e., conscious sedation, ET intubation, some other device? Also, standard sedatives/anesthetics for this type of case if someone would be so generous 🙂

I was thinking about it, and it made me curious if they could still perform the procedure with an ET tube in place. I'm having them removed in a little over a week and just wanted to have a heads up as what to expect.

GA with ETT. It can be done with an LMA, however I don't know anyone that does it that way.

Re: ID's mention of LMAs - During training I performed some peds T&A's with an LMA per anesthesia attending preference; For the life of me, I can't understand why now. And to my knowledge it wasn't ever the preference of the ENT surgeon.

Nope. The tube is midline, and usually held against the tongue by the tongue blade of a mouth gag the ENT guy uses. The tonsils are lateral.
