  1. Medical Student
Hey Everyone - wanted to get some insight from Residents or Attendings. I'm a 3rd year medical student; I've High Passed or Honors my clerkships this year, except, unfortunately, I just found out that I did not pass my surgery shelf and will have to re-take the shelf soon;
I attend an US MD program; scored a 217 on step 1 and I plan on taking Step 2 early.
I have research in Anesthesia and will have good LORs.
How would this hinder my chances of matching into anesthesia? I'm planning on doing aways in NYC, which is where I want to end up.
Any advice on how to approach this or overcome this would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I don't think one failure will keep you from matching somewhere. Come up with a plausible explanation for the failure in case anyone asks in an interview. Apply a little more broadly. Step 1 is average - try to improve on Step 2.

Last charting outcomes step 1 average was 226 for seniors who matched. OP- by "try to improve" PMPMD actually meant you need to destroy step 2 to have a decent shot at matching in nyc (unless we're talking montefiore, suny D, maimo etc).

Correct

Thanks for the quick replies!
When you say destroy step 2...what kind of score should I be aiming for? I've started hitting the books and I'm taking the exam in a few months before I do my aways...

Thanks again!

As well as you can. According to Charting Outcomes 2011, the mean step 2 score for matched US seniors was 235.

You should be shooting for 250+ on Step II. That Step I score is low.

Like others have said, it shouldn't prevent you from matching if you apply smart. But you definitely need to improve your Step II score a lot above Step I.
